Richmond kicked of its first annual Bacon Festival on Sunday, June 9 at the Richmond Farmers’ Market with an overwhelming crowd turnout.

People love success stories that they feel personally connected to. Whether it's a band that you saw for the first time in somebody's basement that's now headlining Bonnaroo, or a quarterback you took a shine to early in his career who just won the MVP award, it's always nice to watch the rise of someone you've been following for a long time. For fans of wrestling, WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan is one of the biggest success stories of the past decade.

Bacon has seemingly become America’s favorite breakfast meat in recent years, with popular sitcom characters regularly expressing a penchant for it (I’m looking at you, Ron Swanson). Big name diners like Denny’s recently started serving "bacon sundaes" on their menu along with a slew of other bacon-centered dishes. Clearly, we’re a country that loves bacon, and Richmond is no different.

Hitting 4000 Instagram followers is not an easy task. It takes a special kind of appreciation for the art form - quick photos of a specific nature, maintaining themes, and more importantly, providing content that people find interesting. Atlanta-based pizzeria Mellow Mushroom will be opening its first Richmond location in Carytown next week. For some, the coming of Mellow Mushroom means the further encroachment of corporate franchises on the small business dominated street of Carytown. Before doing any research, I was a little hesitant about the business myself, seeing as I am certainly a Richmonder that favors my neighborhood businesses over outsiders.
