You can hear it if you listen closely, a pulsating beat through the dark and narrow, rigid alley ways of Richmond, Virginia. As the sun dwindles, the manifestation begins. The sound of deep thumping fills the angsty core with an uncontrollable urge to suit up, for the sole purpose of ripping it all off later. The dirty city nightlife is not for the faint of heart, as so they say.

In the eyes of Against Equality (AE), the mainstream gay agenda has shifted. No longer pursuing larger social issues, groups like Human Rights campaign and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force instead concern themselves with members of the LGBT community that are least impacted by discrimination.

Amongst hordes of wine loving Virginians, I was lucky enough to to attend the 6th Annual Wine Expo this past Saturday. Hosted at the massive Greater Richmond Convention Center, the event benefited FeedMore, Central Virginia’s core hunger relief organization. More than a collection of wineries, the event featured vendors selling specialty foods, art, jewelry, and “wine accessories” whose categories ranged from zany furry wine koozies to logoed aprons geared towards the soccer mom crowd. All tasters were given a snazzy Riedel wine glass, many of which broke throughout the afternoon, but more on that later.

It’s a Friday night and it’s freezing outside. Grace Street is all but dead; with the glowing lights of a few neon signs and the shuffle of college students and smokers between venues, everyone seems to have a place to be. Strange Matter, with its wavy glass block tiled front window, emanates a soft, but pronounced thump of bass and treble beats. The sandwich-board sign out front, a scratched in simple chalk, reads “Beard: a Free Queer Dance Party.”

Michael Klenfner was the most famous guy in the music business that you’ve never heard of. The former Atlantic Records executive was responsible for breaking such acts as The Blues Brothers, Cher, and The Rolling Stones, just to name a few.

It's everywhere lately. Everyone from The Daily Show to Buzzfeed to the Florida Gators and the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon crew has done it. And now, the Harlem Shake video meme is coming to The National.

Friday marks the grand opening of The Valentine Richmond History Center's exhibit, A History of Richmond in 50 Objects, which explores the history of Richmond, Virginia, through a selection of objects from the Valentine's collection.

Well look at that! Valentine’s Day 2013 is here--and I’m not referring to the classic star-studded film directed by that old guy, Garry Marshall! Why, Valentine’s Day the most romantic day of the year!

It has become very clear that the goal of The Cheats Movement Blog in 2013 is to do something bigger for the RVA community.

Folks, it's that time of year once again, and sports fans all around the city are getting excited for the weekend. Yes, the Super Bowl is on, but the most important physical challenge taking place in RVA this Sunday is the Fourth Annual Pho King Challenge at Mekong Restaurant.

Richmond’s beloved independent radio station, WRIR, is gearing up to celebrate its 8th birthday with their 8th annual fundraiser, “The Party For The Rest Of Us.”

This year was such an amazing year for the Cheats Movement Blog and 2013 is only going to be bigger and better. I really pride myself on the photos that are posted on the blog, and this is just a sample of some of my favorite photos of the year.
You can’t put ‘naked’ on a marquee in Henrico County. This is one of the many lessons learned by Alison Barber, the Owner and President of Taboo Inc..”Someone asked us to take down a banner of me holding a whip, and I respectfully declined,” said Barber on some of the uproar she’s heard from the public, but she never let those obstacles get her down.

At this time of year, it's a perennial question, one dating back at least as far as a pre-rock n' roll record by The Orioles: "What are you doing New Year's Eve?" It's the biggest party night of the year--the one no one wants to stay at home for--and the options for the evening's entertainment are so ridiculously overabundant that it can be easy to end up totally paralyzed by the sheer amount of activities to choose from. But have no fear, party people! We here at RVA Magazine sympathize with your plight, and have put together this helpful consumer guide to getting the most out of the last night of 2012!

Longtime RVA music retailer Plan 9 Records, who have been in business in the Carytown area for over three decades, have relocated. Opening last week in part of the space formerly occupied by Pirouzan Oriental Rugs, the record store is now located at 3017 W. Cary St, across the street from the location it had occupied for the past 16 years.

Ghost Of Pop is my favorite show I play every year, because it kills two birds with one stone. Fun, obviously, needs to happen to keep life moving, but there are a myriad of issues that sometimes prevent a good time. This show combines those two thoughts for a positive result. We gather, we play, we watch, we hear, we have a good time, and just by doing this we raise funds for an incredible cause.

Our friends at The Cheat Movement are always up for helping people out. Check out how they spent their Thanksgiving.
