Mekong is starting a new night on Mondays for the people of RVA: all draft beers all night are AWESOME, with live music starting at 9.

FEATURE SHOW
Saturday, July 21, 10pm
The Diamond Center, Creepoid, Ttotals, Canary oh Canary, Revolt of the Apes DJ @ Strange Matter - $TBA/18+
Wow, what a show. Everybody is going to be at this miracle. Setting the tone will be the DJ extraordinaire, Revolt of the Apes. Soundscapes have never tasted so delicious. Then you've got easily one of the best, most unique, hauntingly amazing bands in Richmond, Canary oh Canary. What is Canary oh Canary? It’s what I’ll call garage-gaze. It's spirited, dandelion music, centered on Michael Harl’s esoteric lyrics, that takes you away like Calgon.

If you’ve got the time, reread the first part of last week’s scope before moving onto this one.
The astrology world calls planetary threesomes like the one happening now “T-Squares”, and they are never to be taken lightly. Uranus is now lining up in a three-way tug-of-war with Mars and Pluto.

A video posted on Youtube could, if it is what it is claimed to be, constitute exonerating evidence for Randy Blythe, the Lamb Of God vocalist arrested for manslaughter last week in Prague, Czech Republic. The incident that led to Blythe's arrest occured at a 2010 live performance by Lamb Of God in Prague, during which a fan received a traumatic head injury and later died of wounds sustained during the show.

Considering that I've only had power at my house for two of the past seven days, I kind of feel like the weather we've experienced here in RVA over the past week or so has been bad enough. But apparently things could be a lot worse, at least according to a spoof weather forecast recorded by WTVR Channel 6 meteorologist Aaron Justus, which was spread around the internet over the weekend.

This sounds like the beginning of a self-help program commercial, so forgive the preachy preachy. But I feel obligated to let you know that the planets are begging us to assess our limits. Do think realistically, and don’t be too hard on yourself. This goes for everybody:

Monday, 6/25 Vinyl Conflict Presents White Lung, Eurotics, Enemy Exorcism, Fire Bison (pictured above) @ Strange Matter 9pm.

Thursday, 6/21 Listener, The Homeless Gospel Choir, Fire Spoken By The Buffalo, Comrades (pictured above), Shy Low, Of Want And Misery @ Kingdom 6pm.

Uranus (take a moment to giggle…) is facing off with Pluto June 24th, and it will happen six more times before the end of 2015. Essentially we are talking about Chaos, Invention, and Revolution VS Globalization, transformation, and Rebirth. Holy shit, you guys. This is generational warfare.

In this episode, GiLL made the trip out to Ashland VA to join the guys on the Rubber Room. GiLL, a band dedicated to legendary naked basketball player Aaron Gill, draws from many musical influences. From reggae to the blues, these guys are really all about rocking out and have a good time. They provided a sneak peak to the album they are currently recording and will be releasing in the not too distant future. Be on the lookout. Enjoy.

Throughout the past 7 years, Gallery5 is proud to have hosted some of the best local music events in Richmond. Gallery5 would not be where it is without the bands that have graced our stage, and we certainly look forward to what's in store for the future of our region’s music scene.

In the last episode of Radio Rubber Room, the guys welcomed their first ever Northern, VA quartet: Stomp Status. Stomp Status is a four-piece Jazz/Funk hybrid that formed amidst the halls of the George Mason Music Department. Though young, these promising musicians exhibited the high level of knowledge of instrumentation and composition you'd expected from music majors.

Dispatch 1: Drinking Myself Excellent
So there’s this bottle in front of me. The label says Epic Imperial IPA. It tells me that it is bottle number 14 of 1,800 produced. It’s telling me that it is rare, exotic, something to be coveted. Of course, it’s also telling me that my inner hop fiend will be sated, but there are other, cheaper, more easily available beers that can accomplish that. It's regal, simplistic design imparts a self-assured quality that made its presence among the hop-porn labels surrounding it on the shelf something mature, more dignified. Its matte finish belies some modest confidence, like a blandly yet elegantly dressed school teacher repeating old maxims about what’s inside counting more than appearance.

What do RVA Playlist and the RVA Beard League have in common? They are both pieces of the whole that have added to the growing vibrance of Richmond over the last few years. This episode is packed full of music related conversation and facial follicles. Enjoy.

I can't recall the Boulevard without Velocity Motorcycles--the glorious chrome flashing in the sun and catching my eye as I passed by the shop. Occasionally those trips would inspire fantasy of selling my truck and drifting the open road. Bouncing from town to town with a sack of clothes, looking for odd jobs to get from one place to the next. Those brief moments were the closest to a Ducati I've ever been.

Moon madness occurs at every full moon. Ask local law enforcement. A Gemini (air) Sun is now opposing a Sagittarius (fire) lunar eclipse. The Twins represent something very logical and analytical within us all, and the Archer represents what we strive towards. When logic faces the future, there is a sense of reckoning. Some “aha” moments followed by “oh shit.”

Joel Salatin, the owner of Polyface Farms, located west of Staunton in Augusta County, VA, will be speaking in the Ellwood Thompson's Community Room tomorrow evening at 5:30 PM. Salatin, who raises livestock using holistic methods, engages in sustainable agriculture, and describes himself as a "Christian-libertarian-environmentalist-capitalist-lunatic-Farmer," has been featured in Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma and the documentary films Food, Inc. and Fresh.

Unfortunately, the battle for women’s rights, and specifically its effects on Planned Parenthood, will probably not see a conclusion in the immediate future. Thankfully, those fighting the good fight are a growing number, and their efforts continue to flourish across the city of Richmond. In particular, Gallery 5 will be hosting A Festival Of Rights, an event to benefit Planned Parenthood, presented by Worthless Junk Records and Bitch City on Saturday, May 26th.

Monday, 5/21 Dogs on Main Street, The Low Branches (pictured above by Sarah Walor), River Whyless @ Gallery 5 7pm.

Venus, our seductive planet of love and money and all of the pleasures and downfalls that go with it, moves retrograde at Gemini beginning today and ends the 27th of June. Venus appears to be moving backwards or standing still in the sky because of the way the Sun casts a shadow on it in relation to Earth. This period is going to be a time to reflect on your personal life and your relationships. This is not a time to take serious action or make rash judgments and decisions. Assess and reassess. You may feel like giving someone the boot, but instead, just take a step back.
