Richmond Tattoo Arts Festival 2011

tattooconv005.jpg

The 19th annual Richmond Tattoo Arts Festival was held on November 18-20, 2011. Shockingly, despite having lived in Richmond for eight years, this was my first time checking it out. However, I went with friends who have been many times before. The new location at the Greater Richmond Convention Center allowed ample parking; maybe it was the time of day that we went, but we found parking with ease. There are also a plethora of surrounding hotels for visitors from out of town, and if nothing else, the convention center is a little closer to crash at friends spot in the fan compared to the previous location, at the Koger Center Holiday Inn in Midlothian.

Sticky Rice's Sushi in Space (Extended)

space_sushi2.jpg

Sticky Rice has sent a sushi roll into space... more specifically they sent their popular Godzirra Roll. In collaboration with RVA TV and Bark Marketing, they launched their sushi plate on January 1st of this year and retrieved the craft in the woods of Central VA hours later. Six months of planning went into this project as a lot of variables were at play: -60F in space, atmospheric pressure on electronics, overheated or freezing batteries, GPS issues, stabilization, and how to make the sushi stay together. The team are hoping for national attention and plan to make a shorter commercial for air play.

Five days removed from the New Years festivities and our ears are still ringing. Pier 94 in Manhattan quickly became the epicenter for one of the most epic live shows and most exciting NYE events I have ever been a part of. As expected, Avicii murdered his set. However, I was most impressed with the duo Cazzette. The two Swedes, who are on the same management label as Avicii, brought an aggressive electro style that was truly face melting while maintaining a blissful control over the crowd’s energy. Their style infuses house and electro with hip-hop and rap making for a dynamically unique vibe. You MUST listen to the live set; Hell, they got us so moved that we even decided to do put together a Cazzette remix collection. Lucky for us, the entire NYE event was live streamed on the web so we can enjoy all three sets (Avicii, Arty, Cazzette) until the end of time.

DAILY FIX: Vice's Marshall Headphones Visit The Slave Pit

eb34a0395a7715e3ea38178daf8448ae_vice_669x375.jpg

The latest episode of Vice Magazine's web series Marshall Headphones: On The Road hit the internet last week, and it features an in-depth look behind the scenes at the Slave Pit, the mysterious factory at the heart of Richmond in which all of the props and costumes for GWAR are created. After getting a tour around the facilities, and hearing some interesting stories about the early days of GWAR from Dave Brockie and some of the other workers there, Marshall Headphones host (and notoriously insane frontman for DC's Les Savy Fav) Tim Harrington gets dressed up in a bodysuit and attempts to audition for a role in GWAR's stage show, at which point Oderus Urungus gives him more than he bargained for. There's some other cool stuff in this 14-minute episode, including a visit with the Black Lips and Vivian Girls at a show in Omaha, and a short Les Savy Fav performance at the end of the video, but the portion of the video that's going to be of principal interest to Richmonders begins around the 6 minute mark. Enjoy!

RVA Magazine Presents: Radio Rubber Room feat. SOUNDSTORM

soundstorm.jpg

This episode marks the first official week for Radio Rubber Room assimilation into the Richmond Media conglomerate that is RVA Magazine. This week also found the hosts knee deep in the talent and youthful energy that is Soundstorm. Soundstorm is a six piece band that consists of Dean Pollard (Trumpet), Gabriel Santamaria (Bass), Nelson Rich (Sax), Nick Andre (Keys), Neko Williams (Drums) and Brittany O'Neill (Vocals). Though the six piece barely has 120 years of combined experience, most members are the product of musical parents, and it shows. Awestruck by the set of pipes on Brittany, amazingly the guys where able to maintain a minimal sense of professionalism long enough to carry on a relatively informative conversation. Listen to this episode and find out which member's goal is to be crowned king of RVA, who aspires to become the Southeast Asian version of Kenny G, and what member is the child of someone from The Wailers.

DAILY FIX: 400 Umbrellas - World AIDS Day, Brown's Island

15KtUn.SlMa.81.jpg

On December 1, 2011, RVA Remembers held a breathtaking ceremony on Brown’s Island in Richmond, Virginia, in observance of World AIDS Day. 400 red umbrellas opened up at 12:00 PM in the formation of a ribbon. The volunteers stood in solidarity for 9 minutes and 30 seconds, symbolizing the time period in which an American is newly infected with HIV. Please watch this video and share it with as many people as possible. 30 years is simply long enough. We must do what we can to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. Congrats to the Fan Free Clinic and RVA Remembers for such a powerful display. Thanks to all participated in this video and helped make it happen. The Cheats Movement is proud to present: 400 Umbrellas in Richmond.

"Someone Call the Police!": Why I Have Decided to Embrace Richmond’s Noise Ordinance

noisepolice120611.jpg

So at this point it’s pretty much established that I am pro-music and anti-police-who-take-the-music-away. The noise ordinance that makes it easy for the police to shut down musical performances has been one of my longstanding enemies. We go way back. Recently, though, I’ve had a change of heart. Not only do I now believe that the noise ordinance should be enforced, I don’t think it’s being enforced enough. I want the police to crack down and really start taking this law seriously. The future of our city is at stake.

Radio Rubber Room EP 41, Featuring No Dice???

nodice1980.jpg

For episode 41 we had Ryan, Ryan and Gina of the rock band No Dice in studio. They told us they had some big new to announce leading up to the show and they did not disappoint. We were pretty certain that they were planning to ask Shaun to model their new line of No Dice underpants, or they were planing on quitting the band and legally changing Gina's name to Ryan so they could start the musical law firm that would come to be known as Ryan, Ryan and Ryan. We were wrong. They actually had three big announcements to make, but you'll have to listen to find out what they are. No Dice is planning to release a new EP early in 2012, and they played us the new tracks. The songs are great, but the name of the band will be changed to protect the innocent. Good music and lots of laughter are packed into every tasty bit of episode 41.
