This Sunday, Slapdash & The Respectables are back with Post Traumatic Fresh 9, the hottest independent hip-hop showcase in RVA!

Ross Harman was one half of the indie electro-pop duo The Gaskets, who left their stamp on Richmond's music scene throughout most of the 00s with several albums' worth of great material and tons of great live shows, which inspired a rabid cult following around town. However, the band ended late last decade when singer Teddy Blanks moved to New York, and Ross Harman took his own life in fall 2010. Shocked and saddened by the loss, and blown away by the amount of great music that Ross left behind, his friends and musical compatriots from the Richmond scene began working to put together a tribute album, featuring bands and musicians that had known Ross and The Gaskets performing their own versions of his songs.

So I attended Dub101 at the Canal Club about two weeks back to rage and grab an interview with the dread-rocking duo from Baltimore, Bassdread.

At the cusp of the New Year, one thing was certain--critics and fans alike were prepared to declare Dead Fame as one of the new Richmond bands to watch. With tunes like “Turning” and “We Can Run,” it’s easy to see why this type of excitement began to grow immediately. On Saturday, they will be celebrating the release of their debut release, the extended-player entitled Frontiers.

As part of what seems a never-ending onslaught of new Richmond bands, Hot Dolphin are the latest to show up on the radar. They will be performing their inaugural set Thursday night at Cous Cous. With a backing band composed of members from The Diamond Center and Tyrannosaurus Awesome, it should come as no surprise that Lindsey Spurrier has an ace in the hole when it comes to this new project.

Bucky Lewis is the 26 year old CEO of Worthless Junk Records. If you don’t know, Worthless Junk is basically Richmond’s indie music equivalent to the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder. They are young, hot in the streets, and only getting better. Proudly displaying a roster that features NO BS! Brass Band, Black Girls, Arches, Remain, Wrist Rocket, White Laces, and now The Trillions, Worthless Junk seems ready for a breakout 2012.

I've been to a lot of hip hop shows in my days and I can honestly say I never know what to expect from the performer. There have been times where I have gone to a show and it has made me like the artist more, and at times it's completely turned me off. On February 9th, RVA and myself got the opportunity to see one of, if not the, hottest hip-hop artists in the game, Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky.

Wino & Conny Ochs – Heavy Kingdom (Exile On Mainstream Records)
While aesthetic evolution can prove a difficult propsition for a great majority of established artists – often seeming as if they're damned if they stay the same and doubly damned if they shift at all – Scott “Wino” Weinrich has spent three decades defying expectations and trends, and in the process has created some of the most bracing work to have emerged from heavy music.

Les La Britanica just dropped their new album, Soft Swerve, a few months ago, but they're clearly not planning to slow down in 2012, as they've already got a brand new single out.

Sometimes things just end and there is no real reason or explanation. That was the case for Amazing Ghost, as Edward Prendergast recalls. “It got to a point where we would play a show a month and that would be it. I guess it felt like the right time to just call it, and see what comes next.” Keeping some of the Amazing Ghost heads around and a new perspective on what he wanted to accomplish musically, Prendergast began to focus his energies on The Big East.

Every third Tuesday, tucked away in the City Tavern Grille in Manassas, VA, gather a rare breed of tenacious spoken-word craftsmen to unleash their phonetic fury on the audience. Hosted by Silent Treatment Ent. and Spirits & Lyrics, Lock'd & Loaded Poetry Slam provides local spoken-word poets with a chance to share their work, and even win some money.

A wave of soulful, full-bodied hymns accompanied by the charming sound of a ukulele filled the classy concert hall of this Fan favorite venue Wednesday evening. Alison Self, a local folk/Americana treasure, opened the room with renditions of mid-century toe-tappers along with some of her originals, all lashed together beautifully with the lulling strings of her ukulele.

The Cheats Movement brings us this excellent-quality live video that combines two different performances by local hip-hop/soul/funk group Photosynthesizers, doing their song "Crush."

We tend to study our musical tastes like we study our friends. We study the clothes they wear. We listen to the things they say they do. We even assume the social groups we think they most likely associate with. But most importantly, we study the words they use, and how they use them. Words tell us about their intelligence, where they’re from, how they spend their time, what subcultural groups they associate with, etc. They make conversation a nice reminder of how we go about our day to day.

Lots of fresh tunes to compliment some gigantic announcements this week. Bonnaroo dropped a huge lineup with a healthy mix of genre. Radiohead, Phish, and the reincarnated Red Hot Chili Peppers are headlining. The biggest surprise in my opinion on the lineup is the Beach Boys, who haven’t toured together in two decades! I mean, I’m most excited for Radiohead but you can bet that I won’t miss this chance to bridge a musical generation gap.

This Sunday at the Tobacco Company is the fourth Richmond Music Review. Anyone who has attended the previous three know that it is a great time, with local bands playing to showcase the musical sounds originating from Richmond. Brought to you by RVA Mag and Radio Rubber Room, this event will bring together several local and near-local bands for the night. And with no cover charge and $2 food and drink specials, Sunday at the Tobacco Company is going to be an explosion.

On Monday, February 6, the English dubstep DJ Rusko hit RVA with his month-long College Tour, which is still in progress, taking him all over the East Coast and Midwestern areas of the United States and Canada. Accompanying him were the Dutch DJ duo Bassjackers, as well as local support acts Beat Down The Kid and MAMMALS. And our own Sam Allen was on the scene as well, capturing photographic evidence of the chaos as it went down.

In the past year Richmond has been seeing two things that are supposed to be outdated, if not dead outright, flourishing and growing within the strange and unpredictable confines of the river city: cassette tapes and rock n' roll.
