It is a really bizarre to experience a play adapted from a musical. Musicals have a campy feel to them, and the plots they revolve around are usually a little daft. The story and emotional content of the piece–humor, pathos, love, anger–are communicated through the words, music, movement, and the technical aspects of the entertainment. The themes and communication are symbiotic.

The Second Annual Mid-Atlantic Beard and ‘Stache Championships

The RVA Beard League is hosting its second annual Mid-Atlantic Beard and ‘Stache Championships April 27th at the Canal Club starting at 7pm. Tickets are only $10 and benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Richmond. After last year’s tremendous success, this year’s championships will be even bigger and fuzzier.

1708 Gallery Presents Still Action!

ART FEED: The National Poster Retrospecticus

This weekend, the National Poster Retrospecticus comes to RVA's own Gallery 5 for one night only. Making its appearance this Saturday, April 20, the Retrospecticus is a massive display of hand printed concert posters featuring work by leading lights of the field such as Daniel Danger, Aaron Draplin, and Aesthetic Apparatus. The exhibit presents posters originally created for such artists as Modest Mouse, Ty Segall, Neil Young, and many more.

Evil Dead has been out in theaters for over a week now, giving die-hard fans of the franchise, and even casual horror buffs, a chance to check it out and put their two cents in. After comparing all the reactions both in online reviews and among my friends, co-workers, etc., I was surprised to discover that most people were a bit taken aback by the film’s attempt at seriousness.
