A few months ago, I reviewed an EP by Shinobi Ninja, and had no idea what to think of it. There were songs that I enjoyed in that guilty-pleasure way, where you might put it on when you're alone but you'd be mortified to be caught by your friends listening to it. And then other songs sounded nothing like that. So... what's this group's deal? Well, I guess we'll all have the chance to find out when they play The Canal Club on Sunday, right?

WHAT: Shinobi Ninja At The Canal Club!
WHO: Shinobi Ninja, with Feed God Cabbage, Photosynthesizers and HaBitS
WHERE: The Canal Club (1545 E. Cary St.)
WHEN: Sunday February 13, Doors at 5 PM
ADMISSION: $8 in advance, $10 at the door

But seriously, if Shinobi Ninja remind me of anything, it's the fusion of rap and alternative rock that was occurring at around the same time of the grunge explosion in the early 90s. If you're thinking of Rage Against The Machine here, you're on the wrong track. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are more what I'm talking about, along with some less well-remembered acts like Urban Dance Squad and Fishbone, maybe even Arrested Development. I don't think any of those bands were as over-the-top as Shinobi Ninja, though, and of course Shinobi Ninja mix in modern influences that those groups had no access to. The vocals, when female member Baby G sings, are reminiscent of Nicki Minaj or Ke$ha, and while they're less distinctive on tracks with male vocals, the noise-funk guitars are always prominent, and will probably remind you of Living Colour.

Shinobi Ninja have all kinds of online products for you to check out--not just the EP I reviewed (which is free: click here), but another, called The Video Game EP, and also an actual video game: Shinobi Ninja Attacks! So yes, the one thing I can guarantee for sure is that you can expect massive ridiculous insanity from this group. But will you actually like the music? Well, here's one more chance to find out:
