JEFF The Brotherhood - Heavy Days (Infinity Cat)

JEFF the Brotherhood is a two-piece sibling band from Tennessee and Heavy Days is their fourth album. Their sound lies in the sweet spot where fuzzy riff-rock meets compact pop-punk. If you were one of my fellow music dorks and we were having a drunken conversation, I’d tell you, “It’s catchy rock, dude. They sound like Fu Manchu covering The Ramones!”

Heavy Days consists of ten songs in just over thirty minutes. Most songs are based around a propulsive guitar part with sing-song chants for vocals. Standouts include the melancholy “The Tropics,” which could be an outtake from Weezer’s blue album; the riff jam “Heavy Krishna;” the quiet/loud Nirvanaisms on “Dreamscape;” and the crushing hit, “U Got the Look” (no relation to the equally misspelled Prince cut).

JEFF the Brotherhood have a beachy, slacker feel that could win them fans of lo-fi bands like Best Coast and jockish stoner rockers Queens of the Stone Age. Heavy Days is just right. It’s unpretentious fun that sticks in your head so you can bring the party with you in your brain. To determine whether or not you will dig Heavy Days, I’ve prepared a list. Check every item that you like. If you mark more than three, let JEFF the Brotherhood into your life.
