Cannabis Corpse - Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise (TankCrimes)

First off, let me say that this record is every bit as awesome as its cover would lead you to believe. Cannabis Corpse’s fourth record of weed-centric death metal is pure precision point bad assery to the highest level, each track laden with nonstop stoned brutality. The group's tongue-in-cheek approach to their band has no influence on the seriousness which they approaches their music, and it shows on each track as over and over again, they deliver some of the best Death Metal heard anywhere in years. The album’s high fidelity production and intricate instrumentation make a perfect match as each squeal and polyrhythmic drum blast comes through loud and clear, losing none of the intensity and heaviness that the groups sound requires. Cannabis Corpse’s Richmond super group line up, featuring members from Municipal Waste, Battlemaster, Parasytic and Voltures, all are on prime display on this record, and their prowess as musicians has never sounded higher. The group's interplay and rhythmically dynamic riffing meld perfectly with the guttural vocals through the time signature changes and stop-on-a-dime hits that fill the album. Given the serious amounts of pure metal that are present on this record, it’s easy to forget that this group is a semi-parody act, until you catch one of the nearly indecipherable lyrics about pot worship and being a slave to the chron. These lines add moments of levity to the music that are almost never present in death metal. Cannabis Corpse’s stoned mockery of death metal seems to be their secret weapon, allowing the group's music to go heavier, faster, harder, and dare I say higher than if they took themselves as seriously as other bands in what is a pretty fucking ridiculous and over top genre of music.
