As part of what seems a never-ending onslaught of new Richmond bands, Hot Dolphin are the latest to show up on the radar. They will be performing their inaugural set Thursday night at Cous Cous. With a backing band composed of members from The Diamond Center and Tyrannosaurus Awesome, it should come as no surprise that Lindsey Spurrier has an ace in the hole when it comes to this new project. From the sound of their lo-fi demos, Hot Dolphin find a niche within a garage rock sound that revels in the snarly rasp of Spurrier’s vocals. In it’s most furious moments, the group channels The Stooges or a more rambunctious Buzzcocks, only with Joan Jett at the helm. It should prove to be an exciting evening indeed when Hot Dolphin delivers a set that I can only imagine will be all things short and sweet.

Joining them for the night’s festivities will be the one and only Blue Rajas. You may recall that this group found their way onto my list of the top singles of 2011, and it was mighty deserved. Zoe and Gracie Golden engage their pop personas with a keen sense of humor and unbelievably catchy tunes. Thumbs Up Everybody for Rock and Roll was only the beginning for this duo as their new material appears to be incredibly promising. If you’re already a fan, plan on catching a spot upfront with everyone singing and dancing along; if you’ve yet to be converted, be prepared for the Blue Rajas to become your new favorite band in Richmond.
