Iceage, a mysterious and sometimes controversial (though not actually evil as far as we can tell) group of Danish teenagers who took the indie world by storm last year with their excellent debut album, New Brigade, are returning to Richmond just less than a year after their last visit to once again wreak havoc upon our local punk scene. Having synthesized the perfect hybrid of early goth terror, UK crust noise, and off-kilter postpunk melody on their debut album, Iceage promises to have even more unexpected awesomeness up their sleeve now that they've had the time to put together some new material.
Joining them on this date will be Double Negative, a group of scene veterans from Raleigh, NC who supply the raging experience to balance out Iceage's youthful vigor. Double Negative's most recent releases are three EPs--the two volumes of 2011's Hardcore Confusion series, and this year's Hits--all of which came out on Sorry State Records, and all of which feature speedy hardcore punk overlaid by a layer of noise and underpinned by some surprisingly catchy hooks. The one-two punch of these two great bands will be enough to wear out even the most dedicated moshpit warriors. And that's assuming they still have the necessary energy to rage through both sets after seeing the local openers, fog-ensorcelled goth-punks Lost Tribe and old-school hardcore heads Unholy Thoughts. Plus, there's the last-minute addition of LA's Zaloa, whom we haven't heard but apparently feature members of West Coast black metal terror crew The Black Twilight Circle, so you know they're gonna be fucking scary. Overall, this promises to be a night of borderline-unchecked raging noise which could very well get out of hand, so if you want to be present to see some serious insanity, at least of the musical kind, make sure you're in attendance.

Just to give you an idea of what you'll be seeing if you make it out to Strange Matter on Wednesday night, here are a couple of videos for you. First, Iceage's new video for "You're Blessed," from New Brigade, features highlights taken from footage of their previous American tour. Then check out Double Negative performing live in Charlotte, NC back around the beginning of 2011. They do three songs, beginning with "Writhe," from Hardcore Confusion Vol. 1, and follow it with two songs from their 2010 LP Daydream Nation. There'll be plenty more where that came from on Wednesday!
