Worthless Junk Records & B-Sides Thrift present RIVER CITY SHREDS
Well, how about this dandy of a music festival. Thanks to the beautiful people over at Worthless Junk and B-Sides, this seminal music festival, featuring 26 glorious Richmond bands, begins making its mark in Richmond music history starting Friday night. Holy Shockoe Bottom Bands! I can’t believe this is not butter. It's poetry and it’s in perfect time. Inspired by Richmond’s core ethic, do-it-yourself, this weekend’s miracle is taking place at The Camel, Kingdom, and McCormack’s Irish Pub. Get your ass down to these joints this weekend, I tell ya!
What makes this festival the glee club from heaven is the fact it’s not a pay-to-play catastrophe, nor is it besieged by corporate sponsors. River City Shreds is just a full on centripetal force of local music that matters. This is by all means a showcase to be heard and felt. Sign me up.

Coitus, Plague Dogs, Disparage, Pissheads (pictured above by Brooke Beans) @ The Nile – $6/21+
Punk rock gets really crusty tonight on Laurel Street as the U.K’s Coitus headlines this end-of- the-common-era show. Coitus features ex members of Dread Messiah, and prove once again society is irrelevant and by all means, the Queen really is dead.
Plague Dogs comes to us from the city of brotherly love, yet by the sound of their pure under-the-sewer punk rock, they are about love as much as a rabid snake would be. The Richmond band Disparage is self-described as fast beat dis-core assault. After hearing that, all I want to do is smack your face six hundred and sixty six times. Pissheads, your favorite new Richmond band, is a fury of piss-drenched sweat about to power-ball their way straight to your gut, with a ripping of your intestines to come later.
Punk is not dead, it just now resides around the corner from yet another VCU sponsored corporate cholesterol haven. Bashing your head into the wall until you bleed is a good thing.

Thursday, September 13, 9 p.m.
Mirror Kisses, Flossed in Paradise, Oxygen Rave @ The Republic – Free/21+
Yes, damn right Harrisonburg has a synth-pop band, and they go by Mirror Kisses. This group has a reputation as being songsmiths that can belt out the chorals. Touring in support of their new album, Dance Decree, Mirror Kisses proves first and foremost they are a rhythmic engine that fires on all pistons.
Flossed in Paradise is Richmonder extraordinaire Alex French’s side project, when he’s not woofing around with White Laces. Drum machines, guitars, and synthesizers constructing new-wave, post-punk, and indie rock have never sounded better. What can’t Alex French do? He’s a renaissance man beyond his years. Oxygen Rave is the trancy, electronic-synth solo project of Les La Britanica's Lindsey French, so you better show up.

Friday, September 14, 8 p.m.
Garbage @ The National - $25/All Ages.
Just admit it--like me, you really want to go see Garbage. I still, deep down inside, pretend that I’m married to Shirley Manson. Sound weird? I don’t care. After reincarnation, it’s a sure bet I’d like to come back as Butch Vig. Butch Vig is 1990’s music. Don’t believe me? Ask Sub Pop. Along with Duke Erikson and Steve Marker, Vig backs up the sexiest woman alive and her orgasmic vocals. Damn.
Garbage’s music continues to get play in my house--as should it get play in yours. Come to the show so you can hear live in person the songs “Vow,” “Stupid Girl,” “I’m Only Happy When it Rains,” and all the other hits, coupled with new songs from Garbage’s well-received new album, Not Your Kind of People.
By the way, contrary to popular belief, the song “Stupid Girl” is not about the typical girl in Richmond--although I could see how folks would think that.

Saturday, September, 15, 1 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Steady Sounds 2nd Year Anniversary Shindig featuring Windhand, Lemuria, Dong Johnson, Sea Of Storms, The Ar-Kaics; DJs Sire Troy, Miss Shing-A-Ling, Greg Darden, Sara Gossett, Carl Hamm & Mike Albrecht; MC'ed by Grandt Mutdge of the Midnight Suggestion Comedy Lounge @ Steady Sounds (322 W. Broad St.) – Free/All Ages.
Wow, Steady Sounds, the best record store in America, is turning a terrible two. But actually, there is nothing terrible about it. Marty and Drew are to be commended for all their hard work. To celebrate this epic moment in life, Steady Sounds is hosting a potpourri of Richmond’s finest, from bands to DJs to comedians. If I show up, you can add clown to the lineup. The headlining band will be the underrated Windhand, and if Windhand’s Dorthia Cottrell is belting out the happy birthdays, then you know it will be a day of debauchery and reflection. Lemuria too? Oh my Nick’s Produce!
While you are at this giant, be sure to pick up some albums. Might I recommend Lionel Ritchie’s third album, Dancing on the Ceiling? Because that’s what everyone will be doing this Saturday at 322 W. Broad St. in Jackson Ward. I can’t wait! Happy anniversary Steady Sounds!

Sunday, September 16, 7 p.m.
The Weakest, Abel Killian, Insubordination @ The Camel - $8/All Ages.
Honest rock and roll straight from the aorta is to be heard tonight from Richmond’s the Weakest. This quintet is far from being weak. In fact, they are as strong as it gets. Poignant music oozes out of Joshua Eadie, Joe Dupre, Sarah Warriner, Jay Rhyne, and K.B. Brodie. Joe and Sarah’s guitars carry this dandelion. This is "hard" in the finest sense of the word, so get down and capture the flag.
I don’t know much about Abel Killian, but he looks like he means business. Could this lad be the second coming of Richmond music royalty? Insubordination is spitfire punk rock that is billed as Mechanicsville’s only punk band. Now that’s a statement. From what I hear from those Hanover County streets, or dirt roads, is Insubordination gets raucous and as loud as a Billy goat. I like the sound of that.

Monday, September 17, 10 p.m.
Catholic Guilt, Bermuda Triangles, Head Molt, New Turks @ Strange Matter - $5/18+
Weird experimental noises from St. Louis invade Richmond tonight, as Catholic Guilt gets over their insecurities towards horny priests and performs at Strange Matter. Think Swans or Crass when you hear these crazy billikens. Is Catholic Guilt’s sound toxic with a bevy of inopportune moments? The answer is a definite yes. Catholicism is falling apart, and after listening to Catholic Guilt’s bandcamp page, I certainly understand why. Get out of the way, because this heavy confusion of noise penetrates the humanity of your depth.
Bermuda Triangles headline this cost of doom. What can you say about this stark reminder of Michelle Obama’s pill popping campaign? If it gets underneath the backside of a magical saxophone just before a cluster of drum demands, then you got Bermuda Triangles on top of two scrambled eggs. Lay in peace, as this flipping ocean darkness heeds the warning from an underground lighthouse.
Head Molt is still going strong. Head Molt is the infinite mind scramble searching for long lost headaches. I can feel my heart beat, but my eyes are in the back of the oven. Head Molt’s noise has to be related to that horse Christopher Reeve fell off of over there near Charlottesville back in ‘95. I have hate in my heart when listening to Head Molt; therefore my zest to collapse in MCV’s emergency room just got amplified. New Turks is a power duo that only expands your inner workings of a suicide barbiturate party.
Hold hands you psychos, Monday found chocolate.

Tuesday, September 18, 5 p.m.
Broadway, Us From Outside, These Hearts, Color Me Valiant, Under City Skylines, Between The Heart And Home, Call It Courage, Winning The Loser's Bracket, October Wolves @ Kingdom - $8/All Ages
Well it isn’t the Mickey Mouse Club, but its better. Broadway brings their post hardcore pop punk from Orlando to Shockoe Bottom, and the kids will love it. I don’t think there is a better band to get the cobwebs out of your ears than this one. For this early evening show for the young to get any better, it has to include hardcore pop rock from Us, From Outside. Hardcore pop rock? I have to admit, that sounds like a drunken dentist with a drill. However, this Jersey band keeps us from thinking only Bon Jovi and Springsteen came from the Garden State.
Coming in from the North Dakota plains are These Hearts. They’re young, cute, and talented pop-core that must be heard. Music is serious with these gents that come from a state that ain’t quite Canada. I can only imagine what these boys sing about; cows, prairies, and Native Americans would be my guess. Richmond’s Color Me Valiant opens this parade with their take on pop punk hardcore something, along with quite a few other VA-area guitar-slinging hopefuls.
Don’t wear high heels to this show; those cobblestones in Walnut Alley are a tricky bunch.
