May is right around the corner which means summer isn’t too far away. Summer means nice weather, the outdoors and beer… summer seasonal beers to be exact. There’s nothing better than relaxing in the sun, by the water, with a cold brew in your hand.

The warm weather to come means more physical outdoor activity like running, kayaking, biking, and rafting. And since we all know beer doesn’t make for the best beach (or should I say river) body, it’s important to get good amounts of physical activity.

Basically, you need to run for you to beer.

Get a head start to your summer this Saturday May 3rd by running in the ‘Celebrate the River 5k’ hosted by Legend Brewing Company and the James River Outdoor Coalition (JROC).

Register for the 5k here.

The race will be a 3.1 mile run around the river, beginning and ending at Legend Brewing Company starting at 10:30am.

After the race, participants will be the very first to taste their new summer seasonal Z Dam Ale brewed with ginger and lime zest. Included in the race registration is the special beer tasting and pint glass.

The event will last from 10:30am-4pm.

“It’s named after the iconic Z Dam which connects Pony Pasture to William’s Island,” said Dave Gott, Vice-President of Operations at Legend Brewing Company. “So we thought it would be good to get together with JROC.”

This race will commemorate the release of the beer and proceeds from the race as well as the Z Dam Ale will be going to benefit JROC which works to improve the James River Park System. They provide resources, maintain facilities and are always looking for ways to improve the parks along the James River.

If you don’t feel like running but you want to learn about fun river activities, Legend will have tons of river affiliated organizations set up in the parking lot.

Here’s the list of groups that will be set up there:
RVA Paddlesports
Discover the James
Ride Richmond
Peak Experiences & Passages
Walkabout
Carytown Bicycles
Relay Foods
RVA More
JRPS
and a few more.

From paddle boarding and rock climbing to biking, there’s a summer activity for everyone.

For people that aren’t participating in the race, but still want to try the new Z Dam Ale, it will be available after the runners do their special tasting.

Legend's festivities include live music, an oyster roast and food specials.

“It’s a big celebrate the river party,” said Gott.

The weather Saturday is looking promising, so a morning race around the river would be a great way to start off your summer. Then, treat yourself being first to try Legend’s summer seasonal Z Dam Ale.

Non-runners can go to Legend and check out all of the different river activities, learn more about them and sip some delicious Legend brews.
