In what has to be one of the crunchiest protests in US history, a marijuana advocacy group plans to get everybody stoned at Trump's Inauguration.
The #TRUMP420 movement was started by DCMJ, an advocacy group for pot smokers, growers and their families in the wake of the failed war on drugs. The group helped form a coalition around the Marijuana Possession Decriminalization Amendment Act of 2013, a city-wide push to make weed possession legal in the Nation's Capital. They got the issue on the ballot, won with 70% of the vote, and (some how) got it through congress making it legal to smoke bud in your home (but still not in public.)
And now they're putting that high energy towards President Elect Donald Trump ahead of his inauguration day on 1/20.
"We legalized cannabis in Washington, DC and we are not going to let anyone take that away from us!" reads the statement provided by event organizers. "This is an outreach opportunity to show President Trump’s supporters we are the marijuana majority! Join us for smokin’ fun time!"
Trump's stance on pot has been a bit vague, but his Attorney General pick, Senator Jeff Sessions, has been clear on the issue. In a recent Senate hearing, he said Americans "need grown-ups in charge in Washington saying marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized, it ought to be minimized, that it is in fact a very real danger."
"You can see the accidents, traffic deaths related to marijuana," he said. "And you’ll see cocaine and heroin increase more than it would have, I think.”
DCMJ responded to the Sessions pick, who's also in hot water for past racist transgressions, by sending a letter to Congress noting he could end up ignoring the will of 60% of Americans who support legal weed.
“We have come to assume Senator Sessions will overturn the will of more than 70% of the voters in the District of Columbia that voted for full legalization if made Attorney General,” read the letter sent to legislators signed by DCMJ co-founders Adam Eidinger and Nikolas Schiller. “He will be empowered to ignore the 60% of Americans who support legal cannabis or the more than 80% of U.S. citizens, who support legalizing cannabis for medical purposes.”
So if you plan to spend Inauguration Day in DC and want to get a bit baked to survive the cold, start off by heading to Dupont Circle at 8am for "coffee & tea and parade down to the National Mall at 10am.
As the group marches, they plan to "hand out 4,200 joints of legally grown cannabis!"
Then, at 4 minutes and 20 seconds into President Trump’s speech, DCMJ encourages everyone to "light up... unless President Trump comes out now in support of full cannabis legalization in all 50 States and DC!"
