Starfucker's New Video - An Interview with Andrew Sloan

Posted by: baylen – Apr 30, 2009

Portland band, Starfucker, has released a new video and I got to speak with director, and Virginia native, Andrew Sloan.

RVA - How did you first come to meet Starfucker, and eventually produce their music videos?

Andrew Sloan - I've been watching them play live for about 2 years, since their first show. I've followed them because they obviously were exhibiting something special. Last summer I got an advance-advance copy of their self titled-LP and proceeded to put it up on my blog for free download, thinking that my friends might enjoy it. My intentions were pure, assuming that a small band like Starfucker could only prosper from the exposure. A few days later I got an email from their manager requesting the link's removal. In the same email she suggested that I do something more constructive to help the band, rather than give away their un-released record. She had taken the time to look at my portfolio which was linked to my blog and suggested I make a video for the band. I immediately jumped at the suggestion, being a long time fan, and having foresight of their success. We scheduled at meeting and a month later I had wrapped up their first music video, for Rawnald Gregory Erikson the Second.

RVA - Well, I too was thinking about posting a link to their album online, but I guess I won't. What was different about making this video, compared to some of your other work?

A.S. - This was the first time I'd ever worked with live video. Live action that is. I'd never shot video for production before, period. I'm used to working in a 3D environment where I envision and create EVERYTHING involved. With video there are limitations that don't exist in 3D. What you shoot is what you shoot and that's it. There's very little wiggle room with live video.

RVA - How difficult of a change was this for you? Do you have any experience with photography and did you understand the basic principles of shooting real life before making the video?

A.S. - I wouldn't call the change difficult, no. When I took on the project the guys new it would be on the grounds that I would be mainly experimenting with the new medium. This understanding made it very easy for me to jump in and play around and just figure out what looks good. They knew I had no idea what I was doing. As far as the "basic principles" go, I'm not sure I even understand them today! I was really a nice learning experience for me, and hell, now I'm a music video director.

RVA - How did the band, and the few people who have seen it before now, initially react to your "experimenting?" Did it take a lot of time? Were there different cuts and changes because "you had no idea what you were doing?" Or is this the product you showed them and they accepted it?

A.S. - Everyone has been responding really positively to the whole project. In post-production, the band would check in periodically to scope out the progress along the way but they generally liked everything I was doing. We seem to work really well together... Towards the end of production some more self-conscious tweaks were made par request of the band... I had some lengthy shots in there of them millin' about and looking cool, you know, like Lil' Wayne does in his videos, and they thought it was too much on screen time for the band. In the end the cuts we made, I think, were for the better. The video flows more now.

RVA - I think if you wanted the video to be more like Weezy's, you should get the band to tattoo tears under their eyes. Can you convince the band to stop in Richmond on their next tour? They can keep skipping DC if they want.

A.S. - You get one wish. Convince the band to get tattoo's like Weezy F or convince them to stop in Richmond.
What'll it be?

RVA - I think we all know they need the tattoos, though it will earn them street cred here in RVA.

Andrew Sloan - For sure. I'll put in the word, man.

When I pick up the book, it feels like I'm in a magical, different world. I wish it would win the book of the year every year.
