There was a time when hip hop was expanding beyond the mean streets that defined its infancy. For a period of around 5 years, groups like Digable Planets had room to touch the mainstream with words that talked of their place in culture and what was possible as a people. This message was drowned out by the mid-nineties by the rise of gangster rap and its offspring which took the music back to self-reliance, materialism and the cold hustle.
