A Chaotic Descent into a Post-Apocalyptic-Tropical Sound: An Introduction to Bermuda Triangles

BermudaTriangles-1.png

In the Richmond musical community, Jason Hodges may be as active as you get. Not only does he currently participate in the bands the Amoeba Men and Suppression, but he also runs locally based record label CNP Records. Hidden in the shadows of late-night sessions was his solo-moniker: Bermuda Triangles. Led by a desire to create a style of music that quenched his thirst for the percussive side of life, he put out two seven-inches with the groups Tickly Feathers and Yoko Boner. The genre, as described by Hodges, is “post-apocalyptic-tropical.”

Film Review: The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3

taking_of_pelham_1-2-3_2009.jpg

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 is a film that has two sides. On one hand, it is a very well performed thriller. Denzel Washington and John Travolta, two proven actors, keep the tension high and the audience on the edge of their seats as they converse over the radio. On the other hand, the film is a ridiculous action movie with frantically cut car chase sequences and collisions that send automobiles literally flying through the air. You have to take the bad with the good, of course, so if you are able to ignore the absurdity, you will enjoy yourself.

Help Books on Wheels find a community space

booksonwheels-1.jpg

From Books on Wheels:

Dear Friends!

You all are familiar with Books on Wheels and our buses and, for the most part, how we operate in terms of providing free books and free bicycle repair as a mobile operation. In the last few months, Ward and I have decided that in order to expand and offer more to the Richmond community we would like to offer a grounded version of Books on Wheels called.. This Community Space will provide a great deal of interesting opportunities for Books on Wheels and the community:

LOOK3: Charlottesville's Festival of the Photograph

LON19531-1.jpg

LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph is a celebration of photography, created by photographers, for those who share a passion for the still image. The festival features exhibits and on-stage appearances of three “legacy” photographers, as well as many exhibitions, outdoor screenings, and projections over three days and nights. Historic downtown Charlottesville is transformed into a “living image” with photographs hanging in the trees, projected in storefront windows and on the sides of buildings, as well as in all the galleries. Billed as “3 days of peace, love and photography,” the Festival is designed to bring together the international photography community and create opportunities for attendees and artists to share images, ideas and to be inspired. The festival is June 11th-13th. Full details about LOOK3 can be found at www.look3.org.

Cheap Eats: Veg!

otley panda veg.jpg

There are tons of great restaurants in Richmond that cater to the vegan and vegetarian diet. You can get pasta anywhere and if you’re cool with that, great; but for your garden gourmands here are some awesome places that have put some real effort into vegan and vegetarian fare. I’m getting excited for veg good because the 2009 Richmond Vegetarian Festival is coming up so soon on June 20, at Bryan Park. For more info on that and a list of other vegetarian dining options in RVA check out the Richmond Vegetarian Society website at www.vegetarianrichmond.org.
