SUNDAY: Baths Bring Unique Electronic Sounds To Strange Matter
This Sunday, Strange Matter will be receiving a visit from one-man electronic music project Baths. Baths--human name Will Wiesenfeld--can be best described as a one in a billion success story involving the proverbial guy who spends most of his time recording alone in his apartment. Hours spent on Ableton Live, mixing tracks containing every instrument known to the Americas, accompanied by wispy vocals that make you think, “Damn, I could do this.” But the fact of the matter is you probably can’t; not like this guy.
RVA No. 13: Shockoe Denim
Everyone who is reading this has worn a pair of jeans at some point in their lives. In fact, I'm so confident that this is true that I dare anyone reading who hasn't to set this magazine on fire. I can't imagine that there'll be any charred copies of this issue floating around town, though, because I can't imagine that any reader of this mag has never worn denim. Is there a more tried and true garment in America than a pair of jeans? Neil Diamond, Flo Rida, and Fergie have all sung praises to the garment whose wearers range from roadside construction workers to the chicest of models. Jeans have longevity unlike any other wardrobe choice. Though men’s and women’s differ by cut, the fact remains that everyone wears them.
SATURDAY: Lucha RVA Presents "Back To The Lucha" At Wonderland!
Lucha Libre is back in Richmond after being on hiatus since October 2009. Billed as “Back to the Lucha,” the first local lucha event in four years is being held on Saturday, June 15 at Wonderland in Shockoe Bottom. Presented by Lucha RVA, the evening is headlined by the “Hill Valley High Massacre Under The Sea Death Match,” an 8-man, No-Holds-Barred match, the winner of which will become the Lucha RVA Champion.

On April 30, after more than four years without a new LP to their collective name, The Boston-based outfit released Golden Rules for Golden People -- a colorful collection of finely tuned pop songs that have garnered nods from Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound and an army of music blogs.

I first saw Best Coast with my dad at Bonnaroo 2011, right after the release of their debut LP, Crazy For You. Their songs were short, sweet, and to the point, while still being incredibly catchy. For months my dad would still sing, “I wish she was my girlfriend... or boyfriend” and I would repeatedly correct him.

Queens rapper Action Bronson hit the scene in 2011 with his excellent debut album, Dr. Lecter, and has been cranking out dope hip hop jams at a prolific rate ever since.

We are getting into June, and the weather's warming up, but there is still plenty of awesome stuff going on in the city! Young Jeezy has rescheduled his show for this Friday, and there are plenty of other shows, benefits, and dance parties going on if you are looking to spend a little less cash. Last week Oakland’s Bad Coyotes played a Church Hill house show, and thanks to a tour cancelation, got to open the Night Birds/Iron Reagan Show last Saturday. Both shows proved way beyond historical.
RVA No. 13: RVA Fashion Bloggers
Fashion blogs come in many shapes and sizes. The iconic street style photographer Scott Schuman, aka the Sartorialist, inspired a generation of DSLR clad fashion enthusiasts to hit the streets and take pictures capturing the outfits of random passerby. The history of street style photography dates back to the pre-internet era, though--think Bill Cunningham’s photos in The New York Times. A relatively newer type of fashion documentation is the personal style blog. Seaofshoes.com by Jane Aldridge is a prime example of this blog genre, one that consists of presumably wealthy females who post pictures of their daily getups followed by a list of the brands featured. A hybrid of these types, and a personal favorite of mine, is that of the Man Repeller. Her witty and intelligent commentary originated as an effort to celebrate those fashion trends women love but men hate: think harem pants. Man Repeller has exploded beyond the realm of the blogosphere into creative collaborations with well known designers (PJK, or those Del Toro flats). Author Leandra Medine even landed a book deal as a 23 year old. Needless to say, fashion blogs are immensely popular. Given many people’s preferences for digital media over print, the relevancy of fashion blogs is perhaps on par with that of magazines.
THURSDAY: Magrudergrind And Coke Bust At Strange Matter
Magrudergrind and Coke Bust, two of the biggest bands in DC hardcore today, will be playing this Thursday at Strange Matter. Both bands are heavily influenced by the powerviolence sub-genre of hardcore, taking cues from bands such as Infest, DRI, and Despise You.
