The local scene has seen its profile lifted in recent months with a combination of great ideas and talent coming together.

In the realm of asshats, there is plenty of diversity; from douchebags who hit on your significant other in a bar when you're right fucking there to bloggers who use terminology for vaginal irrigation as pejoratives, people cutting you off in traffic to shave a split second off of their travel time, and of course the generic "using a cell phone loudly in line for something" asshole.
Then, of course, there are people who making being vile, disgusting excuses for humans their every day life. Enter Fred Phelps, and his bag of dicks from the Westboro Baptist "Church." From Gay RVA:
According to the website of anti-homosexual propagandist Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church, a team of picketers will be making their way through Richmond on Tuesday, March 2. The picketing schedule posted on GodHatesFags.com begins the day at the Virginia Holocaust Museum. Anti-Semitic descriptions of each event accompany the calendar with stops at the University of Richmond Hillel at the JCC, and the Jerusalem Connection.

The young people of the Vietnam Student Association are imaging a new Vietnam on March 6th at Thomas Jefferson High School.

Coming up this March 26-27, United Blood is a hardcore festival. This will be it's fourth year. We're going to have more coverage of this as it gets closer, however, here's two questions that Colin (who run the event with his partner-in-crime Dave) were kind enough to answer for us:

Weird is a monthly dance party starting Feburary 20th at New York Deli, hosted by Anna Johnson and Meghan Worsham.
Weird has a two band, two DJ format. Ideally we would like to have one local band open, followed by a truly excellent out-of-town band (the same goes for our DJs). Our main goal is to move as far away as possible from tired Top 40 jams. We think people here are thirsting for an awesome, original dance party with amazing bands and DJs and are confident that Weird is going to be a huge success.

UPDATE: Robel is in the Men's 15k Cross Country Skiing event TODAY at 3:30PM!!

Shop RVA like all other movements, began as an idea. What started out as an assignment in a graphic design class called Design Rebels became something more.

Recent conversations about why I practice Moy Yat Ving Tsun Kung Fu (pronounced “Wing Chun”) have lead me to make the same statement: “Kung Fu has helped me with a lot of things in my life, most of which aren’t about fighting.” But isn’t fighting what Kung Fu is all about?

Gay bars are gay bars. Is there even such a thing as straight bars? Is an establishment that is not expressly LGBT-oriented a de facto hetero establishment?
From Gay RVA, an op-ed by Cameron Parker:
Why should straight bars try to reel in the gays? Well, for several reasons. Although the Richmond bar scene is already pretty progressive, it seems to be timidly so. When Richmonders feel comfortable in their drinking environment, word spreads like wildfire and people flock to those bars.
