This month we'll be celebrating our one year anniversary of poetry readings at Shockoe Bottom hotspot C'est Le Vin wine & art gallery. Let's make this a spectacular night of vino and verse and get a plethora of poets up there behind the mic! The way the night works is this: we "mini-feature" a wide array of wordsmiths from all experience & publication levels, giving them each 5 minutes to present to an eager audience a "taste" of what they do as poets. We'd love to have you join us! Email me (dottoressa.joanna@hotmail.com) so I can add you to our list of the night's performers. As always, the amazingly talented guys of Super64 will be on hand to provide some harmonious backup to any poet so wishing, and of course to enthrall the audience with some jazz sets of their own.

The Single in the City Bachelor Bachelorette Auction is Richmonds newest premier event for young professionals. In its inaugural year, the event features 20 of Richmonds most eligible men and women, and their fantastic date packages up for auction to the highest bidder. Packages include fabulous local experiences, shopping sprees, great dinners at some of Richmonds finest restaurants, the very best in the local arts scene and many more surprises.

All revenue proceeds help to support the Artistic and Educational programs of Richmond CenterStage – including the BrightLights Education Programs, housed at the Genworth BrightLights Education Center.

The event’s inaugural edition is scheduled for Saturday, May 19, 2012, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with our VIP Reception. This year’s event will be held at Rhythm Hall located inside Richmond CenterStage. Admission is $30 per person ($35 at the door) and $60 for VIP Tickets, which include a VIP Cocktail reception and premium auction seating.

Talking About Testing: A Public Discussion

Is SOL and other standardized testing monopolizing too much of students’ instructional time? Is it affecting the content of what is being taught—and processes by which students learn? Richmond Teachers for Social Justice will sponsor a public discussion on high stakes standardized testing on Saturday, May 19, from 3-5 p.m. The program will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 3602 Hawthorne Ave. The program is open to the public and all are welcome. This event will give students, parents, educators and policy makers the opportunity to share their views on the value or misuse of standardized testing in Virginia’s public schools.. The program will start with a brief panel discussion; the remainder of the event will offer participants the opportunity to discuss their own experiences with standardized testing in the schools, and to brainstorm ways to address problems with the Commonwealth’s current system of high-stakes testing.

Michael Williams Band

Dynamic guitarist, Michael Williams, will join Jonny Lang for a May swing of dates from Cleveland, OH to Richmond, VA before ending at the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival on May 20th, alongside Lang among others. MWB started the year off with a list of invites to perform at several of the most elite Blues Festivals this spring. The Michael Williams Band first appeared at the Clearwater Sea Blues Festival in Tampa, FL in February, sharing the stage with the legendary Buddy Guy before joining George Thorogood for a string of West Coast dates in March.

The critics are in agreement, the next great guitarist may just be Michael Williams. Blending a mastery of traditional blues, soulful songwriting, dynamic voice, blistering licks, and intense performance energy, Michael is bridging the fan-gap between the traditional blues lovers and his younger, rock ‘n roll-based audience. Drawing inspiration from his own bloodline of Blues musicians, including his father, Texas Blues legend Larry “Junior Medlow” Williams, Michael is quickly earning a name for himself among the musical elite.

Artspace is pleased to present AIJPPE, artspace’s International Juried Printmaking and Photography Exhibition. The exhibit opens on May 25th, 2012 from 6-10pm with a reception that is free and open to the public. Although this marks the third exhibition of AIJPPE, this is the first international installment of the show.

This year’s juror and curator is James Stroud, Master Printmaker and Director of Center Street Studio in Milton, Massachusetts. James Stroud is a painter and printmaker represented by Galerie Mourlot in New York City. Mr. Stroud selected 65 images from 449 submitted images and included 59 artists from submissions by 123 artists. Works in 2d or 3d that incorporate printmaking or any photographic process will be featured. Several prizes will be awarded, including a solo show in the Helena Davis gallery. James Stroud will give a gallery talk and awards presentation from 6-7pm on May 25th during the opening reception. The exhibit will fill all of the five gallery spaces and continues through July 22, 2012.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 12-4pm. The gallery is also open
by appointment. Artspace is partially funded by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, CultureWorks, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Artspace has also received funding from The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia. Butterflies LIVE! Hundreds of live butterflies will again take flight in Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden's glass conservatory in 2012. The Butterflies LIVE! exhibit is back by popular demand and will feature showy tropical species. visitors will be able to walk among the butterflies in the North wing of the Conservatory. the exhibit will also feature special plantings to provide food for the butterflies, allowing visitors to get an "up-close" and personal view of these fascinating creatures. Butterflies LIVE! is presented by the Robins Foundation.
