Rainy Day Podcast - DJ CAM

Its raining outside, so here is your rainy day podcast from the vaults.

This is a mix from 2000 from Dj Cam, he really needs no introduction as one of the originators of jazz/hiphop hybrid music. Good mix for summer nights, or while chilling watching the rain come down. Enjoy!!!

Dj CAM -

Parisian abstract maestro DJ Cam is well known for his radical reinventions, a life-long musician who's groundbreaking work established him as a pioneer in the worlds of underground hip-hop, trip-hop, and the dance scenes stretching from New York to Paris to Tokyo and beyond.

Drawing inspiration from the hypnotic trance of voodoo culture, Public Enemy, dub and easy-listening jazz, Cam's style assumes a new identity with each and every project since he first hit the scene in 1994 with his debut Underground Vibes and continues to redefine many of the sounds he had a hand in creating throughout his career.

RVA Radio: Squachek Pickles The East Coast

RVA RADIO is down with bringing you new music whenever we find it. Often we profile and share out local producers and DJs. If you are interested in being profiled on here, hit us up at hello@rvamag.com with a mix!

----------------

This week we have a very special guest all the way from California. Squachek, and luckily he made a mix just for RVA Magazine. We met Squachek in DC some time back, and we were really amazing by his fiery personality and love for the party. He has a hype personality, and love for music thats just contagious - in this mix you can get a feel for this from the very start.

Here is his message just for RVA:

There are towns where culture hits you in the face and towns where you have to dig for it. There are towns where creativity feels at home and towns where those with the least bit of it are making plans to leave. Between the haves and have nots, Richmond constantly straddles the fence. The town is full of historical baggage and political barriers but also a stubborn people who are striving — successfully — to nurture all things progressive from art to music to craft and commerce. RVA helps the diggers find what they’re looking for and the doers proud to call Richmond home.

Squachek Bio

The high-energy and light-hearted electro/techno/hip-hop performances by Los Angeles producer SQUACHEK stem from his teenage years in suburban Chicago, when he spent his days writing punk, metal and industrial tunes about bodily functions, Geraldo Rivera, and death by botulism-tainted pickles.

When he's not crushing dance floors at parties, his DIRTYPUMPS club series, and festivals around the world, Squachek remixes and produces other artists and composes scores for animation, film and television. He can even be found on camera as his other nom de guerre: Johnny Orlando Jr., the West Coast correspondent for top metal blog Metal Injection.

----------------

We have had many great DJs and producers on RVA Radio, but few that I know as well as this week's guest, Doddie Braza. Doddie is one of the best and most talented DJs I have ever met and worked with, hands down. He always has his ear out for new music and sounds - and has an exciting mixing ability that I have always been inspired by. Here we have a set of mini mixes he sent me to check out. Lots of new music here, with some chillwave vibes as well. Take some time to check it all out - and add him on soundcloud and facebook so you can catch him live. --Reinhold

RVA Radio: Obscure "Rocked on Some Blocks"

RVA RADIO is down with bringing you new music whenever we find it. Often we profile and share out local producers and DJs. If you are interested in being profiled on here, hit us up at hello@rvamag.com with a mix!

----------------

Today we welcome in DJ Obscure from the DC/Baltimore area with his Lego Land "Rocked on Some Blocks" mix. Obscure is well known in his area from various Symbiotic, B.A.D.A.S.S, and Steez parties. He will be playing in town on the 18th for the Darth & Vader show. This mix is a nice electro/techno mix with some heavy hitters.

Obscure Bio -

Brought up in the Baltimore electro scene at an early age, Dj 0bscure (Marcus) has moved up and down the east coast rapidly. Moving people with a combination of hard-hitting electro, breaks, techno, progressive melodic breakdowns, a few dutchy beats and exceeding amounts of energy on stage it is no stretch of the imagination as to why his skills have impressed the likes of Symbiotic, Ultra Promotions, Camp Bisco Promotions, Give Productions, Steez Promo and Badass Raves.

Playing everywhere between DC, MD, PA, NY, NC & WV including venues like Echostage, Ultrabar, The Fillmore (Silver Spring), U-Street Music Hall, Baltimore Soundstage, The Paradox, Baltimore Convention Center (Otakon 2012) along with more outdoor venues than your mom has room for. If it's not the track selection, it's the carefully composed progression of his sets that sets him apart. Having opened for like Big Gigantic, Kill Paris, Savoy, Zedd, Dirty Talk, Lucky Date and Dylan Sanders, there are no signs of Dj 0bscure slowing down.

See him at LAZERFACE with Darth & Vader April 18th
In Depth: Kevin Yost

In-Depth is a podcast from RVA Magazine focusing on unique and talented electronic music producers and DJs. In this podcast, we will hopefully introduce you to some new creative music. This week we have a mix from Kevin Yost - a name very recognized in the deep house and the Jazz Influence Compilations.

----------

Kein Yost -

This is a live set recorded in NYC March 16th @ Strangelove. This is a new concept I am experimenting with, which is basically my mobile studio in one small case (apc 40, mpk 49, audio interface and laptop). The idea is to start from scratch and create the music on the spot, feeding off the crowd. Every show is completely different. So far I find it challenging and more exciting than DJing. Looking forward to booking more shows like this in the near future. Enjoy--ky

Kevin Yost Bio

Kevin Yost has become one of the most influential electronic music producers of the past five years. A contemporary master of jazz fusion, he was responsible for creating “One Starry Night”, thought of by many as one of the top ten house records of the past decade. His debut album of the same name topped 50,000 units in sales ands gained him global recognition as a supreme DJ/Producer.

Kevin Yost, keyboardist, percussionist, producer & worldwide DJ. Not too shabby for a guy from a town with a population of less than 6000 people.

Hailing from Waynesboro, PA, Kevin developed an early interest in the world of music. Stimulated by percussion and drums, he quickly grew fond of jazz music and was heavily influenced by the likes of Chuck Mangione and Miles Davis. In his teens he discovered dance music thru the sounds of 1980 electro and hip- hop. From such Kevin continued his interest in music and pursued it in a high school for the arts.

His own unique blend of jazz influences developed in the early 90’s when he began experimenting with different flavors of acid jazz. Working harder and harder to develop a style that mixed jazz and house he looked for a label support in 1996. From such, he worked on various remixes for i! Records (NJ) as well as a variety of original material for what was to become his jazz/house fusion sound. Spurred by this i! Records pursued him to take the music to another level.

This grew into an association with Guidance Records (Chicago) and a release entitled “Unprotected Sax”. With the unique success of this EP, Kevin wanted the sound he was creating to feature a new formula. What he came up was an EP called "Night of a 1000 Drums (IR128). It release on i! in early 1997 opened a door to and gave focue to Kevin Yost the artist. This EP featured what many have called the best house record of that year, “One Starry Night” . Its blend of Caribbean influenced percussion and jazz improvisation make it no less than a classic.

The record also featured Kevin’s retro based AKY Funk & and Stuff and another keyboard extravaganza entitled A Hip on You. Soon after this release Kevin developed the “Dawn Approaches EP”. This EP highlighted Kevins experimentation with strong percussive elements and progressive keyboard textures. In all it proved to be quite extraordinary and spawned the hit “Spring Again”. This was soon followed up with his most unique record to date, The Stick & Stones EP. A four tracker that proved a mind blending merger of jazz and progressive electronica.

Mr. Yost has also proved to be quite the remixer developing unique reworks and new versions of records for Sony, Polygram, MCA & Virgin. Included in such are his powerful remix on the Kodo Drummers “The Hunted”, and a very notable remix of EBTG “Five Fathoms”. While his current schedule provides little time for much else other than producing, Kevin still enjoys following his DJ-ing roots and he has been a featured DJ spinning at venues in all over the world.

http://www.facebook.com/kevinyostmusic

Akasha's Conduit EP

George Rollins, aka AKASHA, has released his first EP, Conduit, on the Vermin Street label. This release has seen immediately shot to the top five on addictech.com, putting Akasha up there with other Vermin Street heavyweights like Mochipet, Bleep Bloop, Sonkin, Mr. Jennings, +verb, and NastyNasty. Check out the release below and info from Akaha about this release. We can't wait to hear more from Akasha!

(*the previewed song is "Again & Again")

It wasn't until a surrender took place of allowing the songs to become what it wanted to naturally and flowing with the inspiration, rather than forcing the will upon the music, did the songs begin to show themselves as something unique and worth while. That is why this new EP is called Conduit: a natural or artificial channel through which something fluid is conveyed. Akasha listens to these songs as manifestations of his subconscious, listening with miraculous wonder that they spawned from nothing and have became a capsule of emotion and spirit. By relaxing and enjoying the process of creation, rather than judging the music every step of the way, Akasha has been able to open the doors of creation and consistently make music that has depth and can be considered complete.

This is Akasha's first official EP that he is honored to have released by the very reputable label Vermin Street. The EP is a blend of rhythms and vibes that could be fit into a variety of categories, with a focus point around ethnic sounds and organic instruments, each filled with many layers of soundscapes. These songs are less dance anthems and more like listening to a musical story unfold. Being often told that his music invokes a vision of a scene in a movie, the tunes have a cinematic quality to them that Akasha seeks out when searching for his own new music. Listeners can expect much more to come, the journey has just begun for what Akasha has to bring for us.

RVA Radio: DJ Rometti

RVA RADIO is down with bringing you new music whenever we find it. Often we profile and share out local producers and DJs. If you are interested in being profiled on here, hit us up at hello@rvamag.com with a mix!

--------------

Stoked to bring you one of RVA's own, Jeremy Rometti! Jeremy has been bringing his unique sounds to us for over 17 years; he is one of few that can roll between many styles in a set. In this set for RVA, he gives us some great house, tech house, and nu disco funky sounds. Make sure and check out his pages...

Bio - DJ Rometti

Born in Roubaix France, an industrial town on the Northern border of the countries Belgium and France; Jeremy Rometti Hartman was exposed to music early in life. His father an avid guitarist and harmonica player would hold jam sessions with friends at the family’s home. Many types of music including blues, rock and jazz could be found in the family home These were largely made up from Jeremy’s parent’s extensive vinyl record collection consisting of thousands of records. Jeremy and his family permanently moved stateside at the age of 5. At the age of 12 Jeremy received his first guitar for Christmas followed by a couple of keyboards later on in the years. In high school Jeremy played in a couple of start up novice punk bands that would hold practice sessions in several garages. Jeremy played rhythm guitar and seldom sang vocals. It wasn’t until 1991 in a local Richmond nightclub when electronic music was discovered by the inquisitive ears of this teenager. It was an industrial / techno party that inspired Jeremy to his calling. Four years later he purchased his first Technics Turntables, a Gemini mixer as well as vinyl to accommodate his new instruments.

1994
Jeremy spent hours and hours at a time in his bedroom discovering and mastering this new trait we know as deejaying. He soon moved to downtown Richmond VA in 1995 and met other djs with the same interests in music. A couple years later he was playing at different clubs and events throughout the city. Within the 17 years of playing out and experimenting into different genres of underground electronic dance music, Jeremy has molded his own exquisite style across the EDM spectrum. Known for collaborating everything from Drum and Bass to Tech House ensures everyone will apreciate the sounds that disperse from the speakers. Romettti has played in 3 different countries alongside internationally known acts such as Donald Glaude, Bjorn Niclas, BT, Noel Sanger, Terry Mullan, Charles Feelgood, Monk, Frankie Bones, Dj Irene, Josh Wink, Doctor P, Flux Pavilion and Jen Lasher just to name a few. His mix sets can be described as an auditory roller coaster ride with deep minimal phases to builds of peak hour funky goodness that seem to transpire from the energy and emotion he personally brings out of himself. Nevertheless any style can be well accomplished into a seamless set which makes him an all time crowd pleaser.

Bio

When it comes down to all the press and hype, his name says it all. He is Worthy. With an in-depth knowledge of production, mixing, and performance, Worthy has the insight to play for his audience, cultivating intense positive energy on the dance floor that can only be portrayed as superhuman. His sound can be described as organic breakbeats with a mix of future house, 80’s, booty bass, and techno. As Carl Cox said, "The Worthy sound has always been powerful, rocking, funky, bass-driven music at its best, and for me this is the new wave in house music." Worthy has received the recognition of major producers who have played his tracks including Sven Vath, Diplo, and Richie Hawtin, among many.

From salty aired islands to dark club basements, Worthy pays reverence to the traditional form of classic house while tripping off the mark and sinking into the euphoric less-charted territories of booty-clapping bass. Touring the globe, Worthy has performed at renowned venues like Hive in Switzerland, Sankeys in the UK, Electric Pickle in Miami, and Mezzanine in San Francisco. Beloved by his fanatical devotees, Worthy has drawn huge crowds to catch his heart-palpitating, sweat-inducing sets at festivals like Ultra, Love Parade, and Burning Man. In 2011, Urb Magazine named Worthy one of the Top DJ’s To See at Burning Man, along with M.A.N.D.Y., Andy C, Soul Clap, Seth Troxler, and The Crystal Method.

Growing up in Washington DC, Worthy was inspired by the early American rave scene. Upon moving to New York in the late 90’s, he was exposed to artists like LTJ Bukem and Stacey Pullen whose music inspired him to play records across multiple genres, from techno and breaks to hiphop and drum n’ bass. In 2001 he swapped coastlines, moving to San Francisco to pursue his music career. He team up with Claude VonStroke as well as fellow east coast brothers Justin and Christian Martin to create the prodigious outdoor party, Dirtybird, which quickly became an institution and a requisite destination for die-hard Bay Area and international fans. Dirtybird Records hatched from the popularity of these parties in 2005, and since then the label and parties have enjoyed tremendous success fueled by the obsession of their cult following.

In 2007 Worthy’s breakout track, Irst Te, released on Dirtybird, quickly established his notoriety as a producer. Concurrently, Worthy released Crack El EP on Leftroom, and soon after, the track Work The Walls and it’s accompanying music video on his personal label, Anabatic Records. Originally intended as an outlet for the release of his own music, Anabatic quickly branched out to sign new artists. Riding the frontlines of today’s music scene, Anabatic Records has been providing a steady stream of edgy, high quality tracks.

In recent years, Worthy has produced a consistent slough of top releases. The release of Worthy & Yankee Zulu’s Concumbia charted in the Top 10 on Beatport for tech house in 2009. He also released various tracks and remixes on Discobelle Records. In the fall of 2011, Worthy teamed up with UK producer Eats Everything. Their first track, Tric Trac, released on Dirtybird received industry praise. Played by artists like Diplo, Boyz Noise, and Cats N’ Dogs, Tric Trac wildly grew in fan appeal moving on to become one of the Top 10 on Beatport for tech house once again. Additionally, Worthy’s simultaneous releases, No Cure and With This combine dirty ass-clapping breaks and gritty synths. The pinball effect of his intricate basslines traverse across the cavern of your ear canal moving inward and blowing your mind. Illustrating the diverse juxtaposition of his range and sound, his February 2012 release, Why You Waiting, on Alive Records, is like glassy water on a quiet morning sea, his beats & melodies mirroring each other, creating a melodic interface that warms the soul. As Worthy states “I want to push my new sound, which is leaning more toward a breakbeat old-school vibe, but still want to keep with the fact that I play house and techno. My focus is to stay innovative and authentic and to continually reinvent myself as an artist.”

Worthy has an original flavor that will amp you up, leaving you feigning for more. The synchronization of Worthy’s music speaks to the connoisseur, the DJ, the groupie and the novice alike. Finding balance and unison across all electronic music platforms, his music is unparalleled. He reads his crowd, breaking and fusing genres, blending styles, and establishing an energetic dance floor camaraderie that makes even the most skeptic hater’s booty shake.

-

From Dope Solo:

"This mix means a lot to me, it's not only a transformation of who I used to be to who I am today, it comes with a name change, reinvention on how I rock parties and carry myself. I had planned on playing a lot of these tunes for New Years Eve with my family in Richmond, but it didn't work out that way, so here it is in mix form. This is my party-break-attack, thug-hop, shake-that-ass, pump-it-up shit; adjust your ears accordingly."

Track Listing -
1.	NWA - Fuck The Police (Figure Bootleg)
2.	DJ Deville – Snap Backs Transition
3.	Skillz - My Homies Still
4.	DJ Deville - Poppin' Arab Champagne
5.	Anthem Kingz - Thrift Shop (Kingz Ultimate Party Break Intro)
DJ Shadow: All Basses Covered (The Miami Set)

All Basses Covered (The Infamous South Beach Set, December 2012)

This is a recreation of the infamous set that got him kicked off the decks at at Mansion in Miami at end of last year. He said, "They said it's too future for them."

Here is the video of this happening live:

The club has apologised since and now DJ Shadow has uploaded the infamous mix that saw his set cut short (see above). Check it out for yourself and see what you think!

This is attached to the mix:
Beginning in the Summer of 2012 with his Low End Theory guest spots, DJ Shadow's "All Basses Covered" set has morphed and evolved to incorporate as many different contemporary genres of urban and electronic music as possible. From hardcore rap to footwork and juke and beyond, Shadow has combed the web to curate seamless and dexterous blends of the most progressive sounds bubbling up from the underground. 'Too hard?' 'Too future?' Or just too raw? As always, DJ Shadow has provoked crucial flashpoints of discussion about the discipline of DJ'ing that have defined our turbulent times.

Teknacolorninja - Bio

The Teknacolorninja is sneaky by nature...flamboyant, colorful in personality and shines through her eclectic sets. Her flow evolves with the scene, but one thing remains clear - her love of bass and making booties pop.

It wasn't till her move to Wilmington, NC from Florida, that she truly embodied the Teknacolorninja. She became a familiar face as “the downtown lady deejay” in 2009, holding a weekly regular with her female veejay counterpart, Jordan La Liason. This ninja was a stealthy energetic force that radiated the Wilmington scene playing at local venues like The Juggling Gypsy, Parallelogram, Jengo’s Playhouse, Charley Brownz, the East Coast Opera House, the Soapbox Laundro-Lounge, Club Ibiza, and resident at the Odessa Bar & Lounge. She had the opportunity to dj a few beach raves and eventually deejayed her first burn - Mayhem 2009 (Cape's Sphere, NC).

Teknacolorninka, aka Cristina Caudill, plays a colorful spectrum of genres and vibes, from techno, house, electro, indie-pop, funk, hip-hop, transglobal tropical riddims to the new emerging future bass scene, while bringing a sensual feminine element that the male-dominated EDM scene can’t touch.

These days, she is brighter than ever, hitting it hard with the Mischief DC crew, Project Chalk (NC) and lovable Richmond compadres -Party Liberation Front (PLF), with whom she’s attributed many of her dj firsts in the burner community - yielding friendships, inspiration and opportunities to connect with like-minded souls.

Most recently she has played at Burning Man 2012, PEX Summer Fest 2012, Figment NYC 2012 and at venues such as The Delancey (NYC), the Looking Glass (DC), Reggies 42nd Street Tavern (NC).

The Teknacolorninja’s mission (as most ninjas would have) is to move a crowd through a musical conversation and to include all “colors” or walks of life. In her mixes, she pushes the envelope in experimenting with different sounds, cultures and vibes, feeding off her environment and blending them into a seamless journey. A conversationalist at heart, the Teknacolorninja is originally from Hampton, VA and is a bit of a cultural chameleon having lived in Panama, Italy, Puerto Rico, Florida, North Carolina, DC and currently resides in Maryland.

It is through music and her travels that the all-encompassing Teknacolorninja has flourished as a creative creature, in which she hopes to make you quiver, grind and shake about ^_^!

http://heyninja.net

In-Depth is a new weekly podcast for RVA Magazine focusing on unique and talented electronic music producers. In this podcast, we will hopefully introduce you to some new producers through their songs and mixes. Now up ... Miguel Migs.

Mix link: FEELIN KINDA MOODY – RADIO MIX

Miguel Migs - Bio

Miguel Migs, who has a new album ‘Outside the Skyline‘, is now moving well and truly beyond the limitations of the house scene in which he first made his name. His deep seated love of reggae and dub shines strongly through as well as his passion for classic rock, blues, funk and soul.

Not that his career to date hasn’t been illustrious enough. Just look the list of collaborators he’s managed to attract: original disco diva Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King, reggae legends Capleton, Half-Pint and Freddie MacGregor, Meshell Ndegeocello, nu-jazz singer Georg Levin and bossa nova phenomenon Bebel Gilberto all feature on the album, alongside Migs’ regular vocal co-conspirators, Aya and Lisa Shaw. No slave to metronomic dancefloor rhythms and tempos, the resulting long-player blends influences from house, jazz, reggae, soul and more, with a heavy emphasis on high-quality songwriting – and equally high production values.

“I definitely spend more time on my studio production sounds these days – I’m constantly tweaking everything!” he laughs. “Songwriting is paramount, but so is getting the EQ right, getting the separation of the sounds right, getting the songs to sound warm with depth, dimension and musicality… I’m pretty happy with this album, but really I still feel like I’m at the beginning of my career — as an artist, as a songwriter and as a producer. I plan on doing this for another 30 years.”

“Those early house records I made,” he continues, “it’s flattering when people tell you they mean something to them, but I was just a broke kid then rushing the productions to get stuff out there, figuring it all out on the fly as I went along. Now, I get the chance to work with some of my musical heroes, which is amazing… when I started work on the album, I sent out a lot of emails to different people, mostly just via their record label or management. And when someone like Evelyn or Freddie replies, and they say they love your music… that’s a pretty awesome feeling.”
But Migs hasn’t turned his back on house music entirely: when he’s not working in the studio with some of the biggest names from across the musical spectrum, he still runs much-loved house imprint Salted Music. Founded in 2004, Salted is Migs’ outlet for “the stuff I like to play as a DJ… those B-side underground dubs!”. Salted was also home to Migs’ last album, 2007′s ‘Those Things’, which saw him collaborating with the big-hitting likes of hip-hop legend Sadat X and Black Uhuru’s Junior Reid, among others. The album won Best Dance Album in the Independent Music Awards, and was also included in Virgin’s yearly Virgin Recommends 24 ECD promotion. It followed in the footsteps of 2002 debut album ‘Colorful You’on Astralwerks, which first brought Migs to the attention of the broader music community and brought him the opportunity to remix big-name artists as diverse as Macy Gray, Lionel Richie and Britney Spears (yes, really).

It was in house, however, that Migs first made his name. After playing guitar in local dub/reggae bands in his teens, he started DJing as well, and by the mid-’90s, Migs – then in his early 20s – started producing electronic dance music. By the time the new millennium dawned, a string of releases on numerous leading deep house record labels had earned him an enviable reputation among discerning dance music buyers worldwide. He’d also become a stalwart of the hugely influential Naked Music stable with his singles, remixes and compilations as Petalpusher.

And today? Well, there’s ‘Outside the Skyline’ of course, a stunningly diverse album that’s sure to win Migs countless thousands of new fans across the globe; at the other end of the spectrum, he continues to run Salted Music to service the needs of deep house dancefloors, “pretty much on a part-time basis, for fun. It’s almost like a side project… but it’s also important to me, to be able to keep pushing that sound, and push new artists.” And of course, he continues to DJ worldwide – he’s been touring constantly since the late ’90s.

Yet despite his A-list status, in a music industry long on supersized egos, Migs is something of a rarity. Despite achieving levels of success – both critical and commercial – that most in the deep house community can only dream of, he remains a genuinely humble, self-effacing individual. He’s a superstar DJ, he’s been nominated on a Beatport poll as Best Deep House Producer, but rather than constantly bigging himself up, he prefers to let his music to the talking.

Thankfully, Migs’ music more than does the talking – it speaks to people. Just listen.
