Math-o-philes rejoice! The nerdiest of holidays is upon us and we thought’s we’d through out some ideas for how you can celebrate 3.14(15) to it’s fullest.

Pi day, for the initiated, is the 14th of March coinciding with the first few digits of Pi (I don’t know how to make the symbol with my keyboard, but it’s in the top image.

What is Pi actually? Well, It’s an irrational number, 3.1415926…, that is exponentially important to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). You use it to measure the circumference of circles (see the gif below).

It was first seen in use in 1900–1600 BC in Egypt and Babylon, and has an infinite number of digits (here’s Pi to 1 million digits). It’s got a lot of practical uses which you can learn about in the video below:

So as the math-inclined mix with those who just enjoy celebrating days with themes, why not start your Pi Day extravaganza with a trip to Proper Pie Co., where even the personal sweet or savory pies are part of the math-based fun!

Woah! Sweet Potato & Pecan is back and SO INSANELY GOOD!

Next, why not head to New York Deli in Carytown for some Bloody Mary’s… in circle glasses (I look for any excuse to enjoy a Bloody Mary, so just bare with me here.)

Up next, sober up and head over the Science Museum of Virginia where they’ve got a day full activities lined up (along with some amazing Pi-puns) – check out details below:

Measuring up to the nature of this holiday, guests will enjoy early entrance to the Museum and activities that kick off at 9:26 am and just keep going and going and going…

Check out the big pie in the sky during a free Cosmic Expedition led by resident astronomer, Justin Bartel, in The Dome at 3 pm. Sample circular foods inside of the Boost! kitchen provided by Relay Foods – from frittatas to pizzas prepared by Pizza Tonight to pies, of course!

Come full circle to uncover innovative creations by middle and high school students during Engineering Ingenuity challenges. Students face the epic egg drop challenge, attempt to construct durable Popsicle bridges and compete in a CO2 drag race competition. School representatives and professionals will be available to explore careers in STEM with guests – inspiring the next generation of great thinkers!

Pi Day and Celebrating Engineering Ingenuity activities are included with exhibit admission. Tickets are $11 with $1 discounts for ages 4-12 and 60+. Celebrating Engineering Ingenuity is sponsored by the Richmond Joint Engineers Council.

Sick of Pi yet? Too bad! This day only comes once a year, so enjoy it.
