When we put up a call for new hires last month, the response was awesome. We heard from a lot of qualified people, but one person stood out above the rest.
When we put up a call for new hires last month, the response was awesome. We heard from a lot of qualified people, but one person stood out above the rest. And that person, we are excited and proud to say, is Amy David.
David, a 2010 graduate of Radford University, with a major in Journalism and a minor in English, was unafraid to let us know what we were missing and what she hope to accomplish if she joined the team. And that energy and passion is what made her so exciting to us.
“I’ve always loved reading RVA Magazine,” said David when we asked her what attracted her to working with the publications. “From the interviews they get with up and coming local artists to major bands it’s always been a dream of mine to cover music and write about Richmond’s rich music scene.”
“I have a passion for [RVA’s music] and wanted to share that with others.”
David’s work history includes working at Richmond BizSense, The Henrico Citizen, and Rockstar Rated.
“I have a passion or writing, and through that passion, dedication and hard work I’ve managed to work for a number of publications in the city to hone my craft,” said David. “I learned to work at a fast-paced daily business journal for Richmond and produced my own restaurant column for a Henrico County newspaper. I’ve learned a little bit of everything along the way.”
David is the first female editorial staff member to work for RVAMag since Tess Dixon who was around in 2005-06.
This female perspective is something she is excited to bring to the table.
“I do want to be a voice for women my age or any woman living in Richmond,” she said. “I think we can combat different issues women are facing these days with a certain sensitivity and sensibility.”
David said she was no stranger to RVAMag’s image as a kind of ‘boy’s club,’ and she hopes to help change that view without making her gender the focus of her work.
“It’s exciting to bring a female voice and I hope to have more women reading our magazine!”
But beyond the addition of a female voice, David hopes to discover new music and artists, and help grow the voice RVA and GayRVA already have in the community.
“I want it to be Richmond’s go to source for all things music, art, and culture,” said David. “In the long term, my dream is for the magazine to host our own music festival again.”
