Technology merges with opportunity this coming weekend, as Richmond hosts the second annual RVA Hackathon on Saturday, June 22, presented by Mobelux. The 2013 RVA Hackathon is a 12 hour event that begins at 8 AM. Attendees will have 12 hours without theme restrictions, language restrictions or platform restrictions to develop their ideas into working prototypes.

Attendees are allowed to either enter the competition on their own or with a team of any size. Teams are even allowed to work with other teams if they desire. Teams from the first RVA Hackathon, held in April 2012, pulled together a wide variety of different projects. These projects included everything from apps and printers to computer games.

Admission to participate in the Hackathon is $25. The day includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks, and coffee, which are provided with a paid admission. All attendees will also receive an official 2013 RVA Hackathon laser etched mason jar. After the time limit expires, creators will present their projects to judges and a guest panel. The projects judged to be the best will receive custom awards created by hosts Mobelux and local laser-etching business Big Secret.

Fans who do not wish to spend the entire day creating are allowed to join the fun at 9pm to view all of the creations, meet the participating programmers, and watch to see who wins the grand prize. The 2nd Annual RVA Hackathon is this Saturday at the Black Iris, located at 321 W. Broad St. Registration starts at 7am, with the 12 hour work period beginning at 8am. The awards ceremony begins at 10pm. There’s also a preliminary event, the Richmond, VA Drinkup, being held at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, which is located at 2408 Ownby Ln, on Thursday June 20 (that’s tonight!) at 7pm.
