VCU Band Uses Miley Cyrus Cat As Distraction Tactic During Basketball Game

OK, this is awesome. We all know about yelling “brick!” or whatever when someone’s taking a shot at the driveway basketball hoop, but the NCAA is the big leagues, and VCU’s band is taking courtside trolling to a whole new level.

OK, this is awesome. We all know about yelling “brick!” or whatever when someone’s taking a shot at the driveway basketball hoop, but the NCAA is the big leagues, and VCU’s band is taking courtside trolling to a whole new level. During last night’s game against the George Mason Patriots at the Siegel Center, the band attempted to distract George Mason’s free throw shooters by holding up a huge banner of the kitten that appeared on a giant video screen behind Miley Cyrus when she performed her hit single “Wrecking Ball” on the American Music Awards last November. Not only did they hold up the banner, they even played their version of “Wrecking Ball” and chanted “Meow! Meow!” at the Patriots players while they prepared to shoot.

Did the tactic work? Well, George Mason were 56% on free-throws last night, down from their typical 69% average this season. More importantly, the Rams won the game, 71-57. If it took a little Miley-style trolling to make that happen, I’m sure no one on VCU’s side of the court is complaining.

The Siegel Center was sold out last night, so as you can see, plenty of Instagram users were on hand to capture the madness (including logan_whitton, who shot this story’s top image). Plus, there’s even some video of the band’s hijinks, in which you can hear a brief snippet of their version of “Wrecking Ball”:

And for anyone who missed it back in November, here’s Miley’s original performance with the weeping, lip-syncing, levitating kitten:
