What a sensational fest this will be. Metal never dies, especially when it is heavy and or doom metal. Since 1999, the Stoner Hands of Doom Fest takes place in a different US city each year. One year, the festival was even held in Germany. Yes, the Stoner Hands of Doom Fest has an international reach. This year it comes to Richmond and Strange Matter for the first time!

Strange Matter will be a perfect venue for this festival, mainly because of its size. While many folks will be coming in from out of town, I entrust they will find Richmond to be the marvel that it is. This year’s lineup is amazing. All bands are worthy of singling out, so I won’t single any one band out. You will just have to see it to believe it. There are some awesome local bands mixed in the lineup, so don’t forget to show heavy support for the hometown favorites. What sets this fest apart is its ability to show love to new up and coming bands, so see the future, be the future.

If you purchase the $60 complete festival pass, it is beyond worth it, and you will save. Forty bludgeoning metal bands adjoined with the heavy–you can’t go wrong! Earplugs are optional, but after four days it’s a guarantee your ears will bleed. However, that’s a good thing.

* Fair warning here–remember this festival could completely sell out, especially the weekend shows, so get tickets through Strange Matter now, or at least get to the shows early to avoid getting left out.

Wednesday, November 6, 9 p.m.
SS Web, Tigeriss (pictured above) @ Wonderland – Price at door/21+

SS Web out of Milwaukee is an acoustic rock quartet full of machismo and swinging good times. These guys are extremely strong road warriors who never put on a sub standard show. SS Web is the kind of band that if you’re into rock, acoustic punk, or rockabilly, you should slide on down to the Bottom tonight. It will sure be worth it. SS Web has thrown out a lifeline- catch it!

Kingston, New York’s Tigeriss is quite the sexy rock and roll band. No esoteric genre here, this trio fronted by the lovely Lara Hope is straight ahead rock and roll. This powerful threesome is pure love and will be your musical bliss between the between the week days.

Friday, November 8, 10 p.m.
Todd Herrington (Photo by Dave Parrish), My Darling Fury @ The Camel – Price at door/18+

The man that has to be considered the best and definitely the busiest bass player in Richmond is holding a record release party tonight. I’m talking about Mr. Bass himself, Todd Herrington. This man has been there, done that, and then some. Having played in the seminal Richmond band Modern Groove Syndicate, and currently playing bass for DJ Williams Projekt, Herrington keeps the rhythm going and always sets the evening’s tone. Coming from a jazz, funk, blues and jam background, this man is a true artist.

Tonight he’s bringing in a who’s who of Richmond’s musical elite he’s calling the “Things” band, in conjunction with the title of his new LP Things. Check out this lineup, it’s insane: Daniel Clarke on keys and vocals; Charles Arthur on lap-steel guitar; Andrew Rapisarda on guitar; Joel DeNunzio and Kelli Strawbridge on drums; JC Kuhl on sax; Reggie Pace on trombone, vocals, and percussion; Bob Miller on trumpet; Lydia Ooghe and Jonathan Meadows on vocals, and of course Herrington on bass, guitar, and vocals. Holy Broad Street! This evening is beyond miracles and could easily be considered a night of perfect sounds. Show of the Year candidate, I do declare.

Opening this beauty will be the high rising My Darling Fury. This indie band is also celebrating an LP release, so show up early. This show – which is no doubt a miracle – might sell out, so again arrive early. Besides, the Camel has tasty beer on tap, so it will be worth it. See you there!

Friday, November 8, 10:30 p.m.
White Laces, The Diamond Center @ Balliceaux – $5/21+

Do I even have to say anything here? When two of the best bands in Richmond perform on the same bill, it’s an event for the ages. What would make this night even better is if they performed on the Balliceaux stage. Holy pit vipers at Texas Beach! The exquisite psychedelic shoegaze-like garage sounds of The Diamond Center and White Laces are playing Balliceaux tonight! Well, I’m going. If you don’t go, you have serious psychiatric issues and its time you throw yourself off the James Monroe Building. This show will resonate with just how amazing the Richmond music scene truly is. If only we could get those young wealthy white people in the front of Balliceaux to come to the back part. Oh well – they don’t read books, so anything cultural is out. Friday night is all right, and Lombardy St. is for getting groovy.

Saturday, November 9, 9 p.m.
The Vacant Stairs, The Knievels @ Bogart’s in the Fan – $5/21+

The Vacant Stairs, featuring longtime Richmond musicians Jeff Phillips, Bryan Clouse, and Chuck Mugler, are back and better than ever. These veterans of indie garage rock will perform these subgenres the way they are supposed to be played, from their original roots. For you long time Richmond music aficionados, you will recognize the significance of the fact that you just have to be at Bogart’s tonight. Experience always wins in the end. Also on the bill is another fabulous ‘old school’ garage band, the Knievels. The Knievels used to rip up a joint, and they still do, so be sure to take in the quality sounds of the Vacant Stairs and the Knievels tonight.

Sunday, November 10, 7 p.m.
Fight Cloud, Zula (pictured above), Basmati, Night Idea @ Gallery 5 – Price at door/All Ages

Tonight, those punchers Fight Cloud are releasing a much talked about EP. This math rock band with full on song structures to die for is worth your ear time. New York’s Zula are an experimental psych pop band destined for great altitudes. Catch them now. If you see only a couple of local bands this autumn season, it is strongly recommended you catch Night Idea. This marvelous indie math rock band is performing in support their new LP, Paths, which is hellacious good. Careful folks, this Sunday matinee in the Ward just might pull a Mike Tyson by sneaking up and biting you on the ear.

Sunday, November 10, 6 p.m.
Say-10 Records 6th Anniversary Showcase featuring Pedals On Our Pirate Ships, Rob Huddleston, Walk the Plank, Stabbed In Back, Among Giants @ The Camel – $6/All Ages

When you combine an incredible independent record label and skateboards, you get the glorious Say 10 Records. Well, Say 10’s hard work has paid off through the years, and now they are celebrating six years as a label. Wow, congratulations guys. Say 10’s roster is full of incredible bands centered on the punk and acoustic-emo rock genres. Tonight will be your chance to see and hear the majority of the roster. The great Pedals On Our Pirate Ships headline. Another Richmond favorite, Ann Beretta’s Rod Huddleston, is also performing, so get ready to have him croon you into drunkenness. As Say 10 puts it, “The label is run by friends and is really all about music, friendship, and essentially what happens when you combine the two.” Well stated, gentlemen. Oh what a night this will be.

Monday, November 11, 6 p.m.
Cellular Chaos, A.R.F., Burn/Ward @ Strange Matter – Price at door/All Ages.

Cellular Chaos is no-wave band out of NYC and features Weasel Walter of Flying Luttenbachers and Lake Of Dracula fame, among others. This band is powerfully entertaining and sets the standard for the underground. Spirited experimentation meshed with an old school rock standard has reared its head of late in Richmond and American music’s underground; moreover, Cellular Chaos is true evidence of this notion, all while cutting the cord on your misery and spilling you towards positive destructions.

Providing local support will be that new group everybody is talking about, the kraut grunge noise band A.R.F. Also blowing your mind tonight will be the grind-core of Burn/Ward. I can’t wait to ride my horse down to Strange Matter for this one. See you there. And oh yeah, it’s an early show – no excuses.

Tuesday, November 12, 8 p.m.
Steez Promo presents Adventure Club (Pictured above from Stoked On Photos), DVBBS, DallasK, Hunter Siegel @ The National – $22/$27 / 18+

Bass! How low can you go? Yes, Chuck D was right on point. But now that it’s 2013, lets also add dubstep to that. The Canadian electronic duo Adventure Club dodges the Mounties and comes a-running to Richmond. The hard trance inspired bass sounds of DVBBS, Dallask’s ecstatic bounce techno, and party DJ Hunter Siegel get you and those kids over eighteen bouncing like marijuana leaves in the wind. Get out there and dance kids, dance!
