Richmond has seen a series of large-scale demonstrations in recent weeks, addressing issues such as President Donald Trump’s executive actions, federal spending cuts, and various other policies. These protests are set to continue, with the next major event, “Freedom Rising,” scheduled for Saturday, April 19th, at 12pm in Capitol Square

Organized by the #50501 Movement, the event aims to amplify the ongoing push for democratic rights, immigrant rights, and social justice. The promotional materials for the event feature historical imagery, such as Revolutionary War-era figures, connecting past struggles for freedom with contemporary activism. Through this symbolism, the movement seeks to inspire modern-day protesters to continue the fight for democracy and rights, drawing a direct line between the revolutionaries of the past and the demonstrators of today.

The movement against the Trump administration in Richmond began on January 20, when the “We Fight Back” protest took place in Monroe Park on President Trump’s inauguration day. Organized by Virginia’s Party for Socialism and Liberation, the event attracted a small group of residents who focused on issues such as workers’ rights and the Free Palestine movement.

On February 5, the #50501 Movement held its first major demonstration, which was part of a coordinated nationwide effort. The movement, which started as a decentralized initiative on social media, quickly organized anti-administration actions across the country. The Richmond chapter became a central organizer for ongoing protests in the city.

On February 17, Richmond hosted the “No Kings Day” protest in conjunction with President’s Day. This protest was a response to President Trump’s political style, drawing comparisons to monarchial rule. The protest followed a controversial image Trump posted on social media, which depicted him with a king’s crown.

Another key event organized by #50501 was the “March 4th Democracy” protest on March 4. The event focused on issues like abortion restrictions, voter laws, and potential cuts to healthcare. This protest continued the broader effort of advocating for democratic rights and protections under the current administration.

In addition to the #50501 protests, other demonstrations were held throughout March. Among them were protests outside Tesla dealerships, protesting CEO Elon Musk and his political ties. These actions were part of the #TeslaTakedown campaign, which aimed to challenge Musk’s influence on politics and his involvement with the Trump administration.

On April 5, the #50501 Movement held a large protest at the Bell Tower on the Capitol grounds in Richmond. Hundreds of people gathered to hear speakers discuss Project 2025, a proposal to strengthen the executive branch under the Trump administration. The event marked a significant moment in the ongoing protests against the administration’s policies.

The “Hands Off!” protests, also held on April 5, attracted thousands to the Capitol grounds. This nationwide day of action saw millions participating across the country, with estimates placing Richmond’s turnout among the largest. The event was one of the largest protests in recent years, drawing attention to a broad range of issues including immigrant rights, transgender rights, and cuts to social security and healthcare programs.

The protests are set to continue, with a large demonstration scheduled for April 19. This event will include a networking and organizing session for local activists, aimed at connecting various organizations working on issues like climate change, Palestine, and immigration rights. Organizers also hope to recruit more volunteers for future actions.

While the protests have primarily drawn older and white participants, organizers are working to create a more inclusive environment for people of color and students. Efforts are being made to ensure a safe space for all participants, especially those hesitant to join due to fears of government retaliation.

As the protests move forward, the focus remains on defending democratic processes, ensuring the protection of civil liberties, and advocating for the removal of corporate influence from politics. The goal is to continue amplifying the voices of those affected by the administration’s policies and to work towards a more inclusive and democratic future.
