A GoFundMe has been launched to support Baby Saphire and the family of Johnnita Russell, who was killed the night before what would have been her 34th birthday. Just nine days earlier, she had given birth to her daughter, who has spent her first weeks in the NICU.
According to Richmond Police, Johnnita was shot inside her home on Hunt Avenue late on Sunday, August 25. Her 96-year-old grandmother was present during the attack. The following day, police arrested her estranged partner, Michael Sprague, the father of her newborn daughter. He has been charged with multiple offenses, with more charges expected.
For her family, the grief is compounded by the sudden reality of raising her child. Johnnita’s sister, April, is now stepping in to care for Baby Saphire. The fundraiser will help cover funeral and memorial expenses to honor Johnnita’s life, ongoing care and essentials for Saphire including medical bills, baby supplies, and childcare needs as well as providing stability for April and the family as they adjust and create a loving home for the newborn.
Friends and loved ones remember Johnnita as someone full of joy and love, who wanted nothing more than to become a mother. That dream was cut short, leaving her daughter to grow up without her.
