The AVR Podcast features some of the most interesting people in the city as they talk about what, how, and why they create. Whether it’s music, art, or any other form of creativity, I get the full story on how the vision came to be, and how it then became a reality. The primary focus is on underground musicians, innovative artists, and revolutionary creators of all sorts in the beautiful city of Richmond, Virginia. This program aims to be a meeting ground for creators and innovators of all types, a place to share ideas, and a place to tell the stories of the countless creative individuals and organizations that make RVA such a wonderful and exciting place to be. We try to talk as much about the history of my guests and their specific realm of creativity as much as possible, but occasionally we get side tracked and talk about whatever the hell we want!

This past week, I had the opportunity of meeting with and talking to a very talented new group of artists called Bland Camp. It consists of Pierce Love, 2~Da, and Halfro. Pierce and 2~Da combine a variety of styles in their music, ranging from rapping to singing and varying constantly in flow and delivery. Halfro, also a rapper, is more inclined to call himself a producer, and over the years has become well versed in making catchy, powerful beats at a rapid pace. I speak with the artists about their writing, recording, and production process, positive and negative experiences while performing, and the importance of positivity. The group members all agree, spreading positivity, being genuine, and having a sense of dedication are the most basic and important things to do as a person and as an artist.

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is. The Light That Never Went Out

There is a spotlight still mounted in the rafters of 528 N. 2nd Street. It has been there since 1914. It has outlasted segregation, fire, the highway that cut Jackson Ward in two, and decades of silence. On the nights when the Hippodrome Theater fills up, that light...

Fourth of July 2026 in Richmond: Fireworks, Festivals, and More

The best Fourth of July celebration in Richmond probably isn't the one with the biggest fireworks. It's the one where someone forgot the hot dog buns, the cooler is running low on ice, kids are chasing each other through sprinklers, and somebody insists they know a...

Field Trip Bikes and the Long Ride of Richmond’s Cycling Culture

I recently bought my first bicycle in more than a decade. Like most people, I started my search online, comparing models, reading reviews, and trying to figure out what kind of rider I actually wanted to be. Eventually I visited several local bike shops before...

Before Richmond Was an Arts City, There Was Best Products

Imagine pulling into a suburban shopping center to buy a toaster and finding a department store that appeared to be falling apart with corners breaking away, walls peeling open like a giant cardboard box, or facades seemingly collapsing under their own weight. For...
