Richmond Ranks #13 for Summer Travel, But Locals Already Know

by | May 19, 2025 | COMMUNITY, CULTURE, DOWNTOWN RVA

So we made another list. WalletHub just released its 2025 rankings for Best Summer Travel Destinations, and Richmond came in at number 13. Not bad, considering we’re usually flying under the radar when it comes to national travel lists. Still, if you’ve been paying attention, this probably won’t come as much of a surprise.

Richmond’s been quietly leveling up for years. It’s not just historic battlegrounds and cobblestone charm anymore. The city’s got an edge—a little grit, a lot of heart—and enough good food, live music, river views, and weird little corners to keep things interesting.

WalletHub says it crunched the data on affordability, attractions, weather, and safety. Sure. But the truth is, Richmond’s one of those places that doesn’t really show up in the spreadsheets.

Why Richmond?

Affordable Adventures: You can eat well, drink better, and catch a show without waking up to a bank account full of regret.

Not Just a History Lesson: Float the James, catch a noise set in a gallery, grab tacos from a food truck that cooks like it’s a Michelin spot. The past is here, sure—but the present’s putting on a hell of a show.

Summers That Don’t Suck: Warm, but usually manageable. Sure, there’s always that two-week stretch where it’s too hot to function—but outside of that, it’s pretty comfortable. Humid? For sure. Miserable? Locals are used to it. But overall, it’s the kind of summer that works well for patio drinks, festivals, and aimless city wandering.

Chill Vibes, No Fuss: It’s a city, not a circus. Enough going on to stay busy, but not so much you can’t find some peace.

So yeah—WalletHub says we’re number 13. We say: good call, but you’re late to the party.

Metro Sound Is Still Here. Richmond Just Keeps Making It Harder.

When Mark Szafranski bought the building at 117 West Broad Street in 1991, the property was in disrepair. Water seeped from the upper floors, the windows were falling in, and downtown Richmond was, at the time, more forgotten than revitalized. But Szafranski, a...

Waitress is the Show for Anyone Who has Ever Worked a Double

A woman works in a diner. The kind with refills, regulars, and fluorescent lights that never quite turn off. She’s married to a man who doesn’t deserve her. She bakes pies that are better than most people deserve. And she wants out. That’s Waitress, more or less....

Richmond Showed Up. Now the Real Work Begins. Get Involved.

Richmond showed up this weekend. We’ve got to hold our leaders accountable—applaud them when they get it right, and hit the streets when they don’t. But protest is just one part of the work. If you were out there—or even if you wanted to be—don’t let it end with the...

Why Norfolk’s NEON District Works—and What Richmond Can Learn

In 2013, a two-day event transformed a neglected stretch of Norfolk, Virginia, into a pop-up arts district. It wasn’t a city plan—it was a vision. Volunteers opened temporary galleries in boarded-up storefronts. Food trucks rolled in. Sidewalks were painted with...

The Vinyl Crypt of Scott’s Addition: Wax Moon’s Strange Magic

Off of Broad Street, deep in Scott’s Addition between warehouses and alleyways, is a black hole in the wall filled with music, vintage VHS, and (perhaps most importantly) Richmond’s preeminent collection of horror-themed pinball machines. I came to Wax Moon on a cool...
