The wife of second U.S. President John Adams, Abigail Smith Adams is famous for her admonition to her husband to “remember the Ladies,” and was a woman well ahead of her time. One of the most prolific and eloquent letter-writers of her time, Adams was an early proponent for women’s education and rights as well as the abolition of slavery. This program will explore the fascinating, intelligent woman behind two U.S. Presidents.

Deborah T. Phillips, or Debbie, is a lifelong native of Chesterfield County who has been interpreting history through her programs and tour guide services for over 15 years. With a degree in history from Salem College, Debbie has worked for St. John’s Church Foundation, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia, and currently serves on the board for the Parsons’ Cause Foundation. As a freelance historian, Debbie researches, composes, and performs all of her own scripts, and is very passionate about bringing history to life for audiences of all ages. The owner of History Lives, LLC, she and her husband also have two wonderful sons.

This 2:45PM program will take place inside St. John’s Church, following the 1:30PM public reenactment. St. John’s Church is located at 2401 East Broad Street, Richmond VA 23223.
