Cy Dune, the new project from Akron/Family singer/guitarist Seth Olinsky, will be performing tomorrow night at Balliceaux. While his other band is best known for their ambient, psychedelic folk stylings, Cy Dune brings a similarly lysergic outlook to shambling, fuzzed-out rock n’ roll. On their first EP, No Recognize, released earlier this year on vinyl/digital formats by Family Tree Records and cassette by Burger Records, Olinsky drenches uptempo garage-psych jams with layers of distortion and backs it up with rhythmic accompaniment that makes up for its looseness with intensity. The result is an invigorating sound that should appeal equally to fans of modern psych revival groups (Tame Impala, Kurt Vile & The Violators), old-school biker movie soundtrack music (The Seeds, Davie Allan & The Arrows), and wild psychedelic experimentation (Comets On Fire, Boris in their more structured moments).
Olinsky is currently on a short tour that’s focused around Raleigh, NC’s Hopscotch Festival, where he’ll be appearing this weekend. While he recorded the Cy Dune EP by himself, he’ll be accompanied on tour by a star-studded live band. It includes bassist Tim Dahl, a veteran of collaborations with Mick Barr and Weasel Walter, among others; and two drummers: Greg Fox (Guardian Alien, ex-Liturgy) and Andrew Barker (Goldsparkle, William Parker Quartet). The resulting quartet should raise quite a squall in Balliceaux’s back room, so don’t miss it! And come early to check out Descendants Of The Sun, the latest project from Scott Burton and Reggie Pace of Glows In The Dark. In a departure from what they’re usually known for, the duo will be improvising beats, loops, and drones for a mysteriously trippy experience.
