Here’s some pretty ferocious metal for all of you out there who constantly clamor for all things heavy and brutal. Christian Mistress are not a totally new band, but they’ve been getting a lot of buzz based on the strength of their second LP and Relapse Records debut, Possession. The first video from the album is for their song “Pentagram And Crucifix,” and it displays all of their strengths in one excellent four-minute clip.
Musically, singer Christine Davis gives the band its most immediately striking element, with her excellent vocals jumping to the forefront of the mix. However, that’s not all they have going on, by any means. The songwriting mixes elements of stoner doom, power metal, Motorhead-style biker chug, and even the occasional thrash section, while the guitar leads are reminiscent of Iron Maiden in their prime. Meanwhile, the video’s distressed black and white footage, filled as it is with mysterious shots of rituals carried out in forests during a snowstorm, definitely creates a foreboding atmosphere that fits the music quite nicely. And of course, there are plenty of shots of the song’s titular religious icons, and they aren’t always right side up, either. If you dig this track (and if you don’t, I question your devotion to the path of true metal warriors), you can hear the entire album at Christian Mistress’s Bandcamp page, HERE. Or you can order it from Relapse on vinyl or CD, along with a bunch of other Christian Mistress merch, by using this handy link: . If you ask me, it’s just too good to pass up.
