DAILY FIX: Feistodon, “A Commotion”

Here’s a really awesome/totally insane thing that I’ve been meaning to post for a while. Some of you may remember that back in April, on Record Store Day, Mastodon and Feist released a split single in which the prog-metallers from Atlanta, GA and the Canadian indie-rock singer-songwriter covered each other’s songs.

Here’s a really awesome/totally insane thing that I’ve been meaning to post for a while. Some of you may remember that back in April, on Record Store Day, Mastodon and Feist released a split single in which the prog-metallers from Atlanta, GA and the Canadian indie-rock singer-songwriter covered each other’s songs. That was weird enough, but this is much weirder–a video for “A Commotion,” originally by Feist and covered by Mastodon, which merges both versions of the song. The video you see appears to be the one for Feist’s original version, in which she trashes a small room full of old furniture and other random items (including musical instruments). At the bottom of the video, though, is a fader that allows you to hear either Feist’s version of the tune (by pushing it all the way to the left), Mastodon’s cover (by pushing it all the way to the right), or some combination of the two. The default position is in the middle, with both versions playing at equal volume, but shifting it slightly to the left or right can create such interesting hybrids as a metal version featuring pretty female harmony vocals, or an indie version with occasional pounding metal chugs at the loudest points in the song. Regardless of which mix you end up liking best, the fun part is getting to adjust the fader and see what the results are. So enjoy this strange hybrid video while you marvel at the wonders of the future we live in.
