Sounds Of RVA put us onto this lovely indie-pop tune from local group Herro Sugar, who (aside from giving themselves a name I’d delicately describe as, um, “racially insensitive”) have done absolutely nothing wrong on this lovely video, which features some great shots of RVA in the springtime that appear to have been shot from the handlebars of a moving bicycle, and is perfect for the beautiful spring Friday afternoon that we’re all currently living through.
I’ve been hearing their name around town for a while now, but this song is the first thing I’ve heard from Herro Sugar, who make me smile with their excellent wordless chorus and sweet, wistful lyrics (“This whole world is gorgeous, we’re out on our porches, our torches are burning and they never go out” and “I love you–you’ll always be famous in my mind” are particular standouts). The words seem to be about an era coming to an end, and based on clues in the equally evocative video, it seems that these kids are students in the Maggie Walker Governor’s School class of 2012, which explains the bittersweet tone conveyed in song and video.
It also makes me more inclined to let them slide on the band name–they’re young, hopefully they’ll grow out of it. I hope they aren’t all splitting up to head to separate colleges or anything; it’s nice to have talented members of the younger generation contributing to the local scene, and if this is what Herro Sugar are capable of when they’re 18 years old, imagine how awesome they’ll be in another two or three years. Hopefully we’ll get to find out, but for now I think I’m just going to play this video three or four more times in a row. Have a great weekend, everyone!
