DAILY FIX: Kid Is Qual, “Knights Of Ole”

by | Nov 16, 2011 | MUSIC

Here’s a brand new video for Kid Is Qual‘s “Knights Of Ole,” from their soon-to-be-released debut EP, Damn, Son. Kid Is Qual are led by Jonathan Sullivan, formerly of Jack’s Mannequin, who clearly takes heavy influence from Zapp’s Roger Troutman (younger readers will remember him as the guy who sang the hook on Tupac’s “California Love”), with his vocoder/”talkbox” singing style and his lead bass playing. That’s the most distinctive element of Kid Is Qual’s sound, in fact–their decision to forsake the typical guitar/bass/drums power trio lineup in favor of dual bass players. When they need it, they’re still able to generate high-pitched leads, but for the most part, the dual bass sound keeps things low and heavy, while their driving rhythms push the song along at an energetic clip. Combined with a video in which Kid Is Qual and a whole bunch of their friends take over a lackluster birthday party and turn it into a bacchanalia of dangerous drugs and irresponsible sex, and you get four and a half minutes of sheer awesomeness. Enjoy!
