In the new issue of our magazine, we told you about how good Silencio, the latest solo album from Stereolab vocalist Laetitia Sadier, is. Now here’s further evidence–the video for the album’s leadoff single, “The Rule Of The Game.” This song spends most of its duration as a quiet, dreamy tune, driven by slowly strummed guitar and Sadier’s beautiful vocals. Meanwhile, the video gives us images of synchronized swimmers cavorting in a pool–images that at least look like they date from 40 to 50 years ago, based on the quality of the film stock. However, as these shots alternate with shots of Sadier herself, in a swimsuit and bathing cap, throwing flower petals into a pool, it seems that director Marie Merlet is going for a retro look. Four-fifths of the way through, the song suddenly develops a peppy backbeat and turns into a sweet uptempo psychedelic pop tune, which then ends all too quickly. The solution, of course, is to play the video again. Silencio was released on Drag City Records last week–grab yourself a copy HERE.
