DAILY FIX: LifeCoach, “Street Cat”

Prolific RVA garage-pop talents Kemper Blair and Stuart Holt, who have previously attained some measure of local fame with groups like Sports Bar, Rabbits, and Cubscout And The Rhinoceros, among quite a few others, have started yet another band. Prolific RVA garage-pop talents Kemper Blair and Stuart Holt, who have previously attained some measure of local fame with groups like Sports Bar, Rabbits, and Cubscout And The Rhinoceros, among quite a few others, have started yet another band. LifeCoach actually combines the lineups of Blair and Holt’s current project, Sports Bar, and that of RVA/NYC duo Sexy Crimes. Apparently the idea for this super-band of sorts came about last year, after Sports Bar and Sexy Crimes released a split EP on local label Sweet Dreams, and then toured together for a few weeks in support of it. The decision to combine efforts was clearly a good one if this first video release is any indication–assembled mainly from still images of cats in adorable poses, the visuals are the perfect accompaniment for the upbeat, catchy tune LifeCoach have set overtop of it. Its simple riffing and driving rhythm speak of a clear punk rock influence, but from the technically unskilled yet irresistibly exuberant vocals to the single-note guitar leads that run throughout the song, it’s clear that this band’s got the same talent for pure pop gold that Blair, Holt, and their many collaborators over the years have always demonstrated. LifeCoach are so brand new that they don’t have any recordings available, and really, other than this video, a skeletal facebook page is the only indicator of their existence. But if they keep writing great songs like this, they won’t be flying under the radar for long.
