DAILY FIX: St. Lucia, “We Got It Wrong”

by | Apr 4, 2012 | MUSIC

I randomly discovered this video in my email inbox last week, and as I’d never heard of St. Lucia before, I almost didn’t watch it. I’m glad I decided to, though–since my first listen, “We Got It Wrong” has been one of my favorite new songs of 2012.

I randomly discovered this video in my email inbox last week, and as I’d never heard of St. Lucia before, I almost didn’t watch it. I’m glad I decided to, though–since my first listen, “We Got It Wrong” has been one of my favorite new songs of 2012. The solo project of Jean-Philip Grobler, a South Africa native who now lives and makes music in Brooklyn, St. Lucia are named for a tiny island nation in the Caribbean Sea, and have an upbeat synth-pop sound that should bring smiles to the faces of New Order and Pet Shop Boys fans, but will also delight those who appreciated the strange atmospherics of underrated experimental UK group Disco Inferno. The group released their self-titled debut EP earlier this year–it can be streamed from their Soundcloud page, and was just released on 10 inch vinyl from Neon Gold Records. The entire EP is just as great as opening track and first single “We Got It Wrong,” but it’s that track in particular that I keep returning to over and over. It is accompanied by a bizarrely captivating video, in which a young girl with a huge mop of red hair that hangs past her waist dances around an abandoned, graffiti-festooned concrete structure. But soon things start to get weird, which has a lot to do with that enormous pile of red hair. I won’t explain further, but I will say that this video’s pleasant aspects far outweigh it’s disturbing ones, and if you’re anything like me, you’re going to find yourself returning to it quite frequently over the next several weeks.
