DAILY FIX: White Laces, “Crawl/Collapse”

by | Jul 20, 2012 | MUSIC

It’s been an enormous year for White Laces. They have released two split vinyl releases, a cassette showcasing a legendary live performance at Strange Matter in January, and an appearance on the recent Harding Street Assembly Lab vinyl compilation. To top things off, August will see the official release of their Speakertree Records debut and first full-length, Moves.

The Richmond outfit has slowly been incorporating several of the record’s tracks into their live sets as of late. With each new unveiling, the anticipation for Moves is growing larger and larger.

To add to the growing suspense, White Laces have officially unveiled the first music video from Moves. The video, as directed by Richmond filmmaker Marleigh Culver, is for first single “Crawl/Collapse.” The enthralling and engrossing track helps to demonstrate the group’s recent penchant for allowing space to unfold as their instrumentation slowly develops throughout their songs. As an added bonus, it helps to cement the impression that the woeful romantic ruminations of Landis Wine continue to evolve, solidifying the group’s reputation as one of the most exciting acts in Richmond. The tone of the song suggests ruminations about places that used to bear familiarity and now take on a less welcome air, which can make anyone reconsider their past and where they are headed. The video portrays this thought artistically, through the use of looming images of this fair city, while taking artistic detours to add sonic textures to every longing visual shot. The video concludes with a graceful exit that can only be found on highways that are far away from the city limits.

It’s quite a success for filmmaker Culver, adding to the canon of exceptional and impressive White Laces videos. It’s also yet another indication that Moves may push the Richmond music scene further into the national limelight.
