Spazz – Precious Medals mixtape (PSMG)

Local Emcee Spazz drops a lot of merits on us with his mixtape, Precious Medals. Spazz built up a lot of anticipation among his fans and followers with the lead-up to his release date on June 12th. When the day arrived, he had plenty of ears wide open, and he has gained a lot of new listeners.

I literally had my head rocking through the whole mixtape. Ill beats and punch lines caught my attention, and a lot of versatility make this release complete. The intro is from an interview with Kanye West, who explains how we need to allow people to think for themselves and present options to the best of our abilities. Then the title track, “Precious Medals,” kicks in. A couple of songs immediately caught my attention–for instance, “Hero. Pt. 2,” in which Spazz rhymes using metaphors of superheroes and their strength to describe his rhyme skill. Also, “Hennessey” has a catchy chorus, which of course talks about Hennessey and partying. It’s a great track to start off your night.

Scrolling through the album, I came across a song that flips the script on the term “balling.” It’s called “Look Like I’m Rich” and has a lot of energy in the live setting. Spazz talks about not being rich, but having fun anyway being broke. A lot of us can definitely relate. “Spazz Jetson” samples the famous Jetsons cartoon, and is very catchy with it’s use of the term “spaceship swag.” After this track comes another skit featuring Kanye; from the looks of it, he is someone Spazz looks up to.

“Letter to Myself” starts off, “I wrote a letter to myself to see how I am doing.” In this song he’s writing to Shawn, the everyday self behind the rap alter ego. He talks about all the haters, and the good and bad times he’s had with, well, himself. “When You Lie” is about post-relationship heartbreak, life without the woman he was with, and her lies. I also liked “The Emphasys” which features and is produced by local emcee Emphasys. This song’s chorus samples the chorus from the old school hit “Déjà Vu,” by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. You can never go wrong mixing a little old school with the new school.

Overall this mixtape has a great mix of songs, and plenty of features to make it hold together as a complete mixtape. I like the fact that Spazz used a lot of different concepts that I personally was surprised to hear from a local emcee. The production’s great and the cover songs were a good change of pace, especially with Spazz added to them. He definitely gets a Medal for this mixtape.

Precious Medals is a free mixtape. You can download it HERE.
