We’ve got an extensive feature on Lucy Dacus, a talented local singer/songwriter from Richmond, in our upcoming print issue. I won’t give away too much right now, but I can assure you she’s an incredible artist well worth your time. To illustrate her talent, The Fader recently conducted a brief interview with her and showcased her latest track “I Don’t Want To Be Funny Anymore.” You can listen to it below.

In her email to The FADER, Dacus shared that while crafting this song, she contemplated the pressure of conforming to a specific persona assigned by others, especially if you’re known as the ‘funny one.’ She explained how it can be challenging to always live up to those expectations and how you don’t want to disappoint people who expect a particular identity from you. It’s a relatable sentiment, and she captures it beautifully in her music.
Dacus told The FADER over e-mail that while writing the song, she was thinking about “how stressful it is to be pegged as a certain type of person and feel the need to always live up to that identity people assign to you, especially if you’re the ‘funny one.'” She continues, “You can’t always be jolly or vivacious or clever or positive, but when people expect that from you, you don’t wanna let them down.” Yes, girl. The feeling of being stuck in one archetype isn’t very fun.
