The seventh annual Ghost Of Pop event happened at Gallery 5 on Saturday, December 10, 2011, and Todd Raviotta was there to capture it all. Here are some highlights from the evening:
MY OLD WAYS:
This brand new group unites Trey Cutrell of Palominos and Curtis Patton of David Shultz And The Skyline, along with a bunch of their friends, who caught some attention with their opening slot on this bill.
YOUNG ADULT FICTION:
These young guitar-slinging indie rockers have effects pedals and aren’t afraid to use them, as they prove on this version of “Dull,” from their Paradise Birds EP. This recording also demonstrates YAF’s mastery over the quiet-to-loud dynamic that was the hallmark of much 90s-era indie-rock greatness:
THE TRILLIONS:
This up and coming local pop group is really making a name for themselves around the RVA as of late. Here are two undeniably energetic and catchy tunes from their set:
HORSEHEAD:
Local alt-country veterans Horsehead acknowledged the holiday season with this rousing version of their original holiday-themed song “It’s Christmastime Again,” from their digital EP Christmas Therapy. As on the studio version, they were joined live by Goldrush’s Treesa Gold on violin:
GOLDRUSH:
This group unites the diverse influences of Prabir Mehta and Treesa Gold, among others, to bring us upbeat country-pop hybrid hoedowns like this catchy tune:
KID IS QUAL:
This dual-bass power trio laid down a thick, heavy groove that overloaded Todd’s video camera mic quite convincingly. However, the visual evidence of their awesome rock power is undeniable, as can be seen in these pics.
Kid Is Qual also won the prize for most elaborate effects pedal setup, as you can see below. Plus, they win special bonus points for the LED display on their amps:
THE DRUTHERS:
This all-star cover band featuring members of Goldrush and Long Arms, among others, played their versions of classic UK tunes from the first wave of punk rock in the late 70s. Here’s their version of Elvis Costello’s “I Don’t Want To Go To Chelsea”:
Finally, the night ended with a surprise set from Prabir And The Substitutes, who reunited for the first time since Ghost Of Pop 5 to close out the evening by playing their song “Five Little Pieces”:
