Marling came to the scene at a young age, releasing her first studio album, Alas I Cannot Swim, in 2008, when she was just eighteen. She quickly garnered recognition for her warm and hardy vocals, and her simplistic instrumentation. While Marling won over English audiences early on, her success her in the colonies did not reach an equal level until her most recent release, Once I Was An Eagle.
Critics and casual listeners alike have praised Marling’s latest album for it’s honest approach to folk music. It’s not flashy, but why over-complicate things? She allows her talent to speak for itself, and it does an impeccable job. No need for integrate and phony production techniques on this album. Marling’s unique vocals draw you in and give you a reason to stick around. You can tell she prides herself on her lyrics, which can tell an entire story in just a handful of words–and what great stories she tells.
In her live performances Marling has no band – just her, her guitar, and her voice. Like her recorded work, her live sound is blunt, and it’s beautiful. There probably won’t be any epic guitar solos or stage diving, but that’s not why you go to a Laura Marling show.
