Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang Bring Country-Style Twist To Classic Claypool Sounds At Jefferson Theater (Ticket Giveaway!)

by | Feb 11, 2014 | MUSIC

We all know Les Claypool‘s work, at the very least, from his extensive history as the leader of alt-funk pioneers Primus–but that’s only the beginning of all the craziness Claypool’s gotten up to over the years. From prog experimentation (Oysterhead) to creative jam-band covers (Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade) and straight up thrash metal (Blind Illusion), it seems like Claypool’s pretty much done it all.

However, his newest project really does represent unexplored territory, and Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang combines Claypool’s bass with the twangy acoustic guitar stylings of M.I.R.V.’s Bryan Kehoe for a drumless Americana hoedown. Claypool’s vocal styles have always featured a bit of a Southern accent, so he sounds right at home on tunes like “Amos Moses” and “Boonville Stomp”–plus, the Duo De Twang have their own version of Primus classic “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver,” so those who are used to Claypool’s (slightly) more conventional work will still recognize the lay of the land. To hear just how weird it all gets, though, you’ve got to check out the Duo De Twang’s indescribable interpretation of The Bee Gees’ legendary hit, “Stayin’ Alive”:

Claypool’s Duo De Twang just released their first LP, Four Foot Shack, on February 4, and they’re about to head out on tour in support of the album. That tour will bring them to Charlottesville’s Jefferson Theater on March 3, and you should make sure you are there!
