Local record labels team up for free ‘Full of Spiders’ showcase at Hopscotch Music Festival next week

Two Richmond Indie labels are teaming up to impregnate Raleigh, NC’s Hopscotch Music Festival with some RVA-music babies on 9/9.

Two Richmond Indie labels are teaming up to impregnate Raleigh, NC’s Hopscotch Music Festival with some RVA-music babies on 9/9.

The showcase features the Richmond-based bands Headless Mantis, Manatree, Clair Morgan, and Avers, as well as Norfolk’s very own Feral Conservatives and Raleigh’s Echo Courts.

Hopscotch itself will play host to a diverse list of acts ranging from Erykah Badu to Beach House.

Starting in 2011 and 2014, Bad Grrrl Records and Egghunt Records are Richmond centric labels with the goal of getting our scene out on the national stage.

“Overall, our mission at EggHunt is to spread the word on amazing Richmond talent. Everything we do is geared towards letting the rest of the world know about the bands from here that we represent,” said EggHunt founder Adam Henceroth. To accomplish that goal, they’ve been working with the Brooklyn-based PR firm Terrorbird, as well as Redeye distribution, to help locals reach a worldwide audience.

“Going to Hopscotch is just another way to spread the word on our RVA/VA artists, because for those days in September, the music industry has eyes on Raleigh,” Henceroth said.

Tim Falen, founder of Bad Grrrl, has been aiming for the same goal and is similarly pumped to head South with the bands.

“Trying to establish a recurring presence there is a good step in the right direction toward expanding Richmond’s platform as a whole,” Falen said.

The Full of Spiders showcase, named at random than with any real promise of spider-based appearances, will be at The Ruby Deluxe (right in the heart of the festival) on Friday, September 9th from 12-5pm and completely free to attend.

“Full of Spiders is gonna be a fast paced, nonstop five hours of kick ass music, and to show Raleigh why Richmond has been blowing up on the music scene lately,” Henceroth said. “People that come will be rubbing elbows with six amazing bands, and the vibe will be chill, but exciting.”

“Yeah, I like Adam’s response on this one,” Falen added. “It will be a pretty intimate venue of big stage bands. It’ll be really nice to see some of these bands in a setting that they usually don’t perform in.”

This is the second time Bad Grrrl has been at Hopscotch with a similar showing at the same venue last year. But this year both labels get a chance to see what the festival could offer, though Falen is optimistic after last year’s event.

“Response last year was way better than I could have expected,” he said. “We had some Richmond locals out to support the bands in a different city. We had a great turnout from people who were just out catching day shows.”

And, as Hopscotch is aiming to become one of the most prominent festivals in the South East, the teams at Egghunt and Bad Grrrl are excited to give us a permanent reach beyond our city limits, and one they’re delighted to share.

“Who knows? Next year we might have a line out the door and up sidewalk all the way to main stage!” Adam said.
