Weasel Walter has been playing extreme takes on American jazz, no wave punk and metal since the early 90s. His original claim to fame was his prolific, infamous, self-described “brutal prog” ensemble The Flying Luttenbachers, and their dark no wave counterpart Lake Of Dracula.

These days, he’s best known as the drummer for Behold The Arctopus, who recently played Strange Matter. Walter has notably brought a sense of humor and punk energy to Behold The Arctopus’s offkilter technical flaunting. He’s also currently involved in an all-star NYC no wave quartet backing Lydia Lunch, along with members of New York no wave’s old guard, including former members of Swans, Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, and Foetus.

Weasel Walter will be appearing at ForInstance Gallery, located at 107 E. Cary St, on Wednesday, August 7. He’ll be playing drums in a touring free jazz trio featuring Chris Pitsiokos, an avant-garde saxophonist and composer; and Tim Dahl, an electric bassist, also of NYC tech metallers Child Abuse and free jazz trio Pulverize the Sound. Opening the show will be RVA noise project Flesh Control (which features members of Olde Shame), local jazz-noise fusion quartet Dumb Waiter (featuring members of Street Pizza), and John Paul and the Gat Busters (featuring Kevin Johnson and the ForInstance Gallery funk ensemble). The show begins at 7:30 PM Wednesday, and admission is $6 (which will be donated entirely to the touring musicians). Weasel Walter’s label ugExplode has a very deep catalog available for free strearming, showcase the wide range of free jazz collaborations and challenging no wave/metal freakouts the label and the man are known for.
