William Tyler, Dave Watkins @ Ipanema – Free/21+

William Tyler, of Lambchop, Silver Jews, and Bonnie Prince Billy fame, is touring in support of his fantastic new album, Impossible Truth, on the fabulous Merge Records label. This seminal indie folk musician has everybody talking. Having grown up the son of the great Nashville songwriter Dan Tyler, pure unadulterated acoustic folk and quality songwriting is in William’s blood. In this genre, Tyler is an all-star, and having him perform at the cozy confines of Ipanema is better than that unattended full bowl of candy some liberal in the Fan District left out on their porch for you to take just take one. Needless to say, you and your friend, dressed like Bert and Ernie, split the take, and dumped it all in your Halloween bags. Then tasty ecstasy ensued–or multiple cavities, for that matter. Yes good times, and that’s exactly what’s in store if you witness this superior songsmith who has played with everybody that counts. Arrive early because Ipanema will be packed. This is surely a Show of the Year Candidate. The Richmonder full of grace and guitar, Dave Watkins, opens this circle of acoustic bliss.

Wednesday, October 16, 7 p.m.
Former Friends of Young Americans @ Globehoppper – Free/All Ages.

Former Friends of Young Americans, out of Phoenix, Arizona, come east with not only a great band name, but a great sound. FFYA is a beyond-intriguing alternative rock band meshed with shoegaze, and a great get for Globehopper. If you can, go to this free show. You will not leave unhappy. Plus you’ll leave on a full stomach thanks to tasty treats, exquisite coffee, and fine brew. What is this, another food review in a city full of food reviews? I mean, what is there more of in this city? Food reviews or restaurants? If you ask me the answer is too damn many. Where was I? Oh yeah, slide on down to the Bottom, and witness this lovely band – they’ll remind you of a Phoenix rising.

Thursday, October 17, 8 p.m.
Rusko, Roni Size (pictured above), Tonn Piper, Dynamite MC @ The National – $25/$30/All Ages

There’s a new British invasion coming! The English dubstep master and good time DJ, Rusko, is back. This producer/DJ can get a room moving. The future of dance and electronic music is the current form of Rusko. Joining Rusko tonight in downtown Richmond is fellow Brit Roni Size. The legendary Roni Size has been a mainstay in the drum and bass game for just under twenty years. Size is also a producer’s producer that continues to reach uncharted boundaries and possesses a soaring intellect in regards to mastering quality digital and electronic music. Such the expert in the drum and bass genre, Size still dictates its future. Roni Size, who never compromises and always reinvents himself at the perfect time, gets better with age, as does drum and bass as a whole. Joining Size will be the electrifying emcee, Dynamite MC out of England. The stellar drum and bass and dubstep DJ out of the great music city of Manchester gets this party for all ages started.

Friday, October 18, 5 p.m.
The Chariot, Glass Cloud, Birds In Row, To the Wind, Seraph, Our Voice the Vessel @ Kingdom – $12/All Ages

It’s a curtain call for the Georgia metal-core band The Chariot. As this beloved band is touring for the final time, tonight is Richmond’s last chance to say goodbye. Led by front man Josh Scogin, these guys can flat out put on a stupendous metal show, so do not miss them. They were also kind enough to bring along fellow metal and pop metal bands Glass Cloud, Birds In Row, and To the Wind. Local metal blasters Seraph and Our Voice the Vessel open what will be a raucous, yet, masterful evening of hard rock for the kids.

Saturday, October 19, 9 p.m.
Negative Approach, The Casualties (pictured above), Primitive Man, Barge, Omega Boys @ Strange Matter – $12 http://nacas.eventbrite.com / $15 Door / 18+

Oldschool hardcore punk legends Negative Approach and the Casualties are bringing it all back to Grace St. tonight. Negative Approach’s John Brannon is still going! Negative Approach’s original front man still wants to fuck shit up, and we all could not be more pleased with his decision. Co-headliners the Casualties return to Richmond with true ear-aching hardcore street punk that will leave you bloody. These bands are punk royalty. Stop thinking this and that current band is punk–Negative Approach and The Casualties are punk.

Primitive Man, off Relapse Records, provides touring support with their brutal hardcore blunt force trauma. Do you love power-violence as much as me? Well good. Richmond power-violence lords, Barge, and old school hardcore punk throwbacks, Omega Boys, open this hide-the-kids and lock-up-the-liquor-cabinet type show. Yes sir, it’s 1981 again!

Sunday, October 20, 7:30 p.m.
Fitz & the Tantrums, Capital Cities, Beat Club @ The National – $30/All Ages

That neo-soul and indie pop band everyone is thinking about catching, Fitz and the Tantrums, is finally coming to Richmond. There are no more excuses; you have to come see this quartet (along with touring members) tonight. To hell with getting back to the grind on Monday, make this a Sunday night full of beautiful music and fun. You’ve seen Fitz and the Tantrums on top of the charts and all over TV, now I can assure you they are even better in person. Touring with Fitz is the incomparable indie duo Capital Cities. Word is that when they actually perform in a capital city, like Richmond for example, their sets are doubled in intensity. The colorful LA indie trio, Beat Club, opens this dance off.

Monday, October 21, 7 p.m.
Saint Vitus, Zoroaster, The Hookers, Cough, Dry Spell @ Strange Matter – $15 Adv http://saintvitus.eventbrite.com / $18 Door / All Ages

Holy DJ Seafood! Saint Vitus is touring again. Thank you God! …who I don’t believe in. This has to be legends week at Strange Matter. Anyway, this is pure doom metal, and what better way to get your fix than from the original purveyors of doom metal, Saint Vitus. This is no dance, yet head banging to the lowest of low, slowest, and dirtiest degrees. It’s a metal-head’s dream–and believe me, Richmond has plenty of them.

An inspiring touring mate, I must say, Zoroaster from Atlanta besieges us with their well defined sludge-metal. The Hookers are self described as heavy metal thunder. Quick note here, they are not ladies of the evening hanging out in front of the Rainbow Motel on Jeff Davis Highway. Sorry, hard up males.

Now, contrary to popular belief, the greatest band in the world, Couch, is not performing on this bill. I know, I know, so sorry. The band that is performing is arguably the best band in Richmond, though, and that is the divine doom metal band off the Relapse label, Cough. Those punk-metal degenerates Dry Spell get the séance started. See you there!
