FEATURE SHOW

Wednesday, October 9, 9 p.m.
The Larry Mitchell Band, DJ Williams Projekt @ The Camel – $5/18+

Larry Mitchell is a phenomenal guitar player out of Alabama who has even won a Grammy for his engineering and producing work. His music is a perfect blend of rock, high energy soul, rhythm and blues, and funk. This guy obviously knows his way around a studio; imagine his dazzling with a guitar in hand on a stage.

This guy is the perfect musician to get you over the Wednesday hump. And, fair warning here – you will dance. Richmond’s answer to the funky rock and jam, DJ Williams, provides local support. Really fun and down to the bone funky rock and roll that can only be construed as amazing is in store for you tonight, so put depression to bed and get your ass to the Camel tonight!

Wednesday, October 9, 10 p.m.
Child Abuse, Staer, A.R.F., R-Complex, Dyrt @ Strange Matter – $7/18+

Child Abuse is wrong. You must never harm a child. Well, there’s one exception–if it’s the band Child Abuse, you must run, I mean sprint, down to Strange Matter and witness this juggernaut of a band. Out of NYC, Child Abuse has been performing avant-garde jazz-noise for many years, and comes back to Richmond’s open arms. The other fabulous noisy jazz outfit, Norway’s Staer, is coming along for the ride. Winner of last week’s Food Fight, Proper Pie’s A.R.F., featuring members of Olde Shame, Body Cop, Men’s Room, Nervous Ticks, and Christi, will punctuate the mark with their kraut-grunge-noise rock. R-Complex, everybody’s favorite harsh synth project, and experimental upstart DYRT, open this potpourri of sound ecstasy.

Thursday, October 10, 7 p.m.
Tom Blacklung and the Smokestacks, Hot Dolphin, Mutwawa, Cy Barkley and the Way Outsiders @ Gallery 5 – $price at door/All Ages

Tom Blacklung and the Smokestacks are back in town and it will be a treat for all those who love pure punk noise and math rock. These gents out of Brooklyn are not the accidental Jackson Ward tourists. Blacklung is a musician’s band going against the grain of what is expected. Blacklung do it their way and have scored legions of loyal fans along the journey. Their performance is a frantic chaos filled with hope, desire and a fondness for naked ladies. The grooves are in the smokestacks of our lives, and Tom Blacklung guides our travels to the middle of a beautiful darkness during every breathe we take.

Richmond’s Hot Dolphin, with their wild-out garage-sounding down to the core rock, and the sideways electronic experimentations of Mutwawa hold court in the middle of this bill.

The other out-of-towners on this menu of debauchery are none other than Nashville’s trashy garage rock kings, Cy Barkley and the Way Outsiders. These guys are a guaranteed sweat.

Friday, October 11, 7 p.m.
Protomen @ Kingdom – $12/All Ages

As you may know, Nashville’s Protomen are a rock band known for composing original concept albums based on the video game series Mega Man. The Protomen’s live theatrical performances alone are worth the price of admission. Currently, the Protomen are also performing from their A Night of Queen tribute to the band Queen. You can definitely expect a ravishing rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

The last two times the Protomen came through Richmond, they left raucous crowds spellbound and begging for more. Do not miss this show at the palace that is Kingdom. Nerds will unite tonight–oh yes they will!

Saturday, October 12, 8 p.m.
WNRN presents Needtoreathe, Ivan & Alyosha @ Canal Club – $30/18+

WNRN knows exactly what Richmonders want and what band they’ll dish out $30 for – that band is South Carolina’s Needtobreathe. Needtobreathe is a glorious Christian rock band that leads all of us to repentance. This band is also full of glory and alternative rock. This multiple Dove Award-winning trio is not to be missed.

Needtobreathe in the past two years has really kicked into high gear as they’ve opened up for Jesus Christ. I’m kidding – I really meant to say Taylor Swift. When Taylor isn’t conspiring with Kanye to create an underhanded publicity stunt, she’s allowing the brothers Reinhart of Needtobreathe to open up her chastity belt.

If any neighborhood needs religion, it’s Shockoe Bottom, so grab a ride on Noah’s Ark–actually one of those canal boats–and set sail to the Canal Club for a good spiritual awakening brought to you by Needtobreathe.

The indie folk pop of Ivan & Alyosha, from Seattle, open this scripture.

Sunday, October 13, 1:30 p.m.
Funky Brunch with the Trongone Band @ The Camel – Free/All Ages.

There’s been a really cool event going on just underneath our eyes and it demands your attention. I’m talking about the Funky Brunch every Sunday at the Camel. This is just as fun and enduring as the famous Drag Brunch at Godfrey’s. Relax and enjoy your eggs and Bloody Mary while the beautiful soulful funk rock of Trongone Band takes you over. Think a hangover from the night before will keep you from checking out this mid day music jam? Well, you would be wrong–it’s the perfect cure for a hangover. The food is as delicious as the live tunes, so do something a bit different on a Sunday and catch a Funky Brunch at the Camel, regardless who the band is. I’m just saying that the Trongone Band is the perfect band to lose your Funky Brunch virginity to. Church? Ha, that’s so done. It’s all about the Funky Brunch.

Monday, October 14, 10 p.m.
Everymen, Creep-A-Zoids, The Hellhounds, The Gospel @ Strange Matter – $7/10 p.m.

We’re closer to Halloween and all the bullshit that comes with it. One thing is for certain – this scary awesome show is no bullshit. Everymen is a sideshow-infused folk punk rock gig that makes their triumphant return to Richmond. Providing the creepy contagious local support will be none other than Richmond’s own Creep-A-Zoids. The ‘Zoids are a real life 3-D rock and roll horror show. You got to see it to believe it. The newly formed Hellhounds feature current and ex members of the Octane Saints and the Shockers. This is a cross of rockabilly, punk, and horrifying in your face rock. Punk rock from The Gospel sets the mood. If you really want to get crazy at this seminal Richmond show of shows, then I do declare you wear a costume. Time to get spooky and spooky drunk!

Tuesday, October 15, 10 p.m.
Funk Butter, Faron Hamblin @ Cary St Café – Free/21+

A very funky third Tuesday is upon us, so get ready to get the funk out. Richmond’s lords of funky grooves, Funk Butter, will take the famous Cary St. Café stage every third Tuesday of the month starting tonight. This is a good time band only for those who appreciate a good time, so check out this funky cold medina. I know I am. Country, blues, and southern rock and roll gentleman Faron Hamblin opens this night of whiskey swilling and funky chicken dances. See you there.
