Singer-songwriter and Richmond native Drew Gibson recently released the music video for “When The Vinyl Scrapes,” the second track on his spectacular album 1532 out this past January. Almost a year removed from the record’s release, this new video gives us all another reason to truly immerse ourselves in the profoundly deep story Gibson touched down upon with 1532.
As we discussed with Gibson back in August, 1532 is Gibson’s way of gently uncovering his family history while coping with the devastating loss of his father in 2012. The manner in which he shifted through family history and handled his father’s passing really helped launch Gibson into a new realm of songwriting on 1532. From both a lyrical and sonic standpoint, it’s not only one the best record Gibson has put out to date, but also one of the best records of 2015 even if it has gone largely overlooked.
The video for “When The Vinyl Scrapes” is a poignant depiction of the song in a visual sense that brings clarity to the theme of Gibson’s intensely personal record. Shot in part in the Nevada desert, director Tobin Herringshaw does an excellent job of really capturing the song’s atmosphere with beautiful shots and crisp transitions that command your careful attention. Herringshaw’s direction leads you to hang on every verse as well as every strategic shot whether it be a drifting look at family photos or a brief glimpse of Gibson putting his anguish into words. It’s heartbreaking and equally rewarding as the barren landscape Gibson finds himself in subtly hints at being able to find peace in nothing.
The resolution is not entirely there – no, the 1532 record will provide that by the end, but it does offer up a more lucid understanding of what Gibson is dealing with on the album. It makes the video for “When The Vinyl Scrapes” required viewing for anyone finding themselves lost in Gibson’s music and also a perfect introduction to the revered world Gibson has beautifully exposed.
